KEY MESSAGES
1. There is a 50 to 90 percent probability of high temperatures of at least 70 degrees through Sunday before cooling down on Veterans Day.
2. A Wind Advisory is in effect from 4 PM this afternoon through 1 PM Thursday afternoon for the Indian Wells Valley, Mojave slopes and Mojave desert.
3. There is a 20 to 50 percent probability of 0.05 inches of rain or more for the San Joaquin Valley on Monday the 11th into Tuesday the 12th.
DISCUSSION
The current atmospheric setup has a ridge of high pressure off the coast of California with a trough over the Pacific Northwest and another trough over Texas and New Mexico. The latest model ensembles are showing that the trough from the Pacific Northwest sliding down the windward side of the Rockies through Wednesday before retrograding to the Four Corners by Thursday. While this trough does this unusual retrograde, the ridge will strengthen over the coast leading to temperatures to slowly warm up to 2 to 5 degrees above average.
The retrograding trough and the ridge building will lead to strong winds across California especially along the coasts. A Wind Advisory has been issued from 4 PM this afternoon through 1 PM Thursday afternoon for the Indian Wells Valley, Mojave slopes and Mojave desert windy zone with a small spot of a 40 percent chance of 55 mph wind gusts in Mojave between 5 and 10 am on Wednesday.
The trough over the four corners will slowly move east on Thursday into Friday as the ridge starts to weaken and move east as well. The ensembles start to diverge late Saturday into Sunday as to the positioning and strength of the next two troughs. The first trough affected will be Saturday into Sunday and the second trough from Monday into Tuesday. However, latest probabilities have dry conditions for the first trough and a 20 to 50 percent probability of 0.05 inches or more of rain on Monday through Tuesday for the San Joaquin Valley with the second trough.
