Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 839 AM PST Wed Feb 24 2021
SYNOPSIS. Dry with gradual cooling trend and clear skies into the weekend. Offshore flow will strengthen today. Winds aloft will increase with the chance for them to mix down to the surface. Our Wind Advisory will be in effect later this morning for the North and East Bay hills, Santa Cruz mountains, and the East Bay valleys. Offshore flow will persist Thursday and Friday, but at weaker speeds. There is a chance for offshore winds to increase again on Saturday.
DISCUSSION. as of 08:39 AM PST Wednesday . Mostly clear skies led to a picturesque sunrise this morning. The clear skies are due to the prevailing offshore flow. The exceptions are a patch of low clouds/fog near Monterey Bay and some patchy fog in the North Bay. Speaking of offshore flow, it's weaker than yesterday morning, but still breezy to gusty in the hills. The highest peaks in the North and East Bay are still in excess of 40 mph. Lower elevations are a different story where winds are much less and in many spots are near calm. The clear skies and calm winds resulted in some chilly morning temperatures with the coldest interior spots hitting the freezing mark.
For the rest of today, a Wind Advisory kicks in this morning and will remain through this afternoon and overnight. Peak offshore flow is still on track to be this afternoon/early this evening. Skies will remain clear, but temperatures will be cooler than yesterday. Highs are forecast to reach mid 60s to mid 70s.
No update needed .
PREV DISCUSSION. as of 03:57 AM PST Wednesday . Clear skies overnight with breezy wind gusts in some areas ranging 15-30 mph. Temperatures at this hour are generally between 40-50 degrees and about 2-5 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. Expect the cooling trend to continue as several models showed the 850 mb airmass cooling from around 12 degrees C yesterday afternoon to about 8-9 degrees C this afternoon. It'll still be a pleasantly warm day today, though not as hot as it got yesterday. Despite the gradual cooling this week, temperatures will still be comfortable with daytime highs in the mid 60s to mid 70s today becoming upper 50s to mid 60s by Saturday. The coolest morning should be Thursday where coastal areas will have temperatures in the low to mid 40s and the inland valleys will see temperatures in the low to mid 30s.
Now let's dig into the winds . Current offshore gradient from SFO- WMC isn't too impressive right now with only a 2 mb difference, however, we expect that to increase as the day progresses. The NAM model indicates the offshore gradient for SFO- WMC will be much stronger tonight at around a 12 mb difference. This is reflected in our forecast with the strongest winds generally occurring between 00-06Z or 4-10 pm local time. Our Wind Advisory will be in effect at 10 am this morning for the North and East Bay hills, Santa Cruz mountains, and the East Bay valleys. After 10 pm, the offshore gradient will continue and strong gusts are forecast to persist in the higher terrain of the North & East Bay hills along with the Santa Cruz Mountains, but East Bay Valley winds should weaken. Thus, the Wind Advisory for the East Bay valleys is through 10 pm tonight, but it will continue for the higher terrain until 4 am on Thursday. Main impact from the enhanced winds will be the possibility of downed branches and trees coupled with the potential for a few power outages. Don't forget to secure any loose outdoor objects around the house. Offshore flow will continue through Friday, but winds will be weaker. Could see offshore winds increase again on Saturday and we'll be monitoring trends in the forecast models to see if we'll need to issue another wind advisory for portions of our CWA.
The dominant high pressure system over the Eastern Pacific will weaken and get pushed westward as a storm system moves into the Pacific NW on Thursday. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like any of the rain will make it south enough to reach our region. Though our NBM model indicated a slight chance of rain over the weekend, a look at the ECMWF ensembles showed that only 11 out of 50 members had light rain for our CWA. The GFS ensembles were even more pessimistic with only 1 of 30 members indicating rain in our area. Thus, we kept the forecast dry through the weekend.
AVIATION. as of 4:15 AM PST Wednesday . For the 12Z TAFs. Predominately VFR with dry offshore flow through the period. Low level wind shear of 25-40kt at 500-2000 feet possible for terminals on the lee side of ridges through this morning and again this evening/tonight, see specific TAFs. Otherwise, patchy LIFR stratus along the southern Monterey Bay (TEMPO BKN003 at KMRY) with breezy to occasionally gusty northerly winds midday.
Vicinity of KSFO . VFR. Light sfc winds with 30kt low level wind shear through this morning. Winds turn breezy out of the north during the afternoon. LLWS returns this evening and tonight.
SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals . VFR. Patchy stratus along the immediate coast will bring TEMPO LIFR cigs through sunrise for Moss Landing through Carmel area incl KMRY.
MARINE. as of 04:03 AM PST Wednesday . Gusty north winds today and this evening then ease early Thursday with gale force gusts in the northern outer waters. Gusty northerly winds will redevelop late Thursday into Friday. These winds will generate steep fresh swell and bring hazardous conditions for smaller vessels. A moderate northwest swell at around 13 to 15 seconds will continue through the waters over the coming days.
