Synopsis A deep marine layer will maintain cooler than average
temperatures through Saturday, especially inland. A warming trend
will begin on Sunday and continue through the middle of next week
as high pressure centered over the four corners area builds
westward over california.

Discussion As of 9:10 pm pdt Friday... A weak upper trough over
northern california contributed to a deep marine layer (about
3000 feet deep at fort ord late in the day), and thus cooler than
normal temperatures in most areas today. However, southerly low
level flow due to a weak surface low over our coastal waters
ultimately had a bigger impact on cloud cover and temperatures in
specific locations across our region. For example, southerly flow
kept low clouds in place throughout the day in much of santa cruz
county. The high in santa cruz today was only 66... Nearly 10
degrees cooler than normal. On the other hand, south winds
downsloping off the santa cruz mountains helped warm san francisco
airport to 76 and san jose to 84, high temperatures that were 4
and 2 degrees warmer than normal respectively.

Little change is forecast through Saturday. The NAM wrf maintain
light southerly flow in the low levels through Saturday night and
the marine layer is expected to remain deep as weak upper level
troughing persist near the california coast.

Low level flow is forecast to transition to a more typical west
to northwest direction by Sunday afternoon. In addition, heights
are forecast to begin rising as an upper ridge centered near the
four corners begins to strengthen and expand westward. Sunday will
be the first day of a gradual warming trend that is expected to
last through the middle of next week. Most of the increase in
temperatures with this upcoming warming trend will be confined to
inland areas, as onshore flow will persist and keep coastal areas
seasonably cool. Inland warming during the first half of next week
will be limited somewhat by the presence of an upper trough
offshore along 140w. The trough will prevent the ridge from
building more strongly across california. And, a weak disturbance
rotating through the trough is forecast to clip northwest
california on Tuesday and likely stall our warming trend on that
day.

In the longer range, the ensemble mean 500 mb forecast from the
gfs and ECMWF look nearly identical late next week, with the four
corners upper ridge persisting and extending westward across
california. This pattern will maintain seasonably warm conditions
inland, but persistent onshore flow will prevent coastal areas
from warming more than a few degrees.

Aviation As of 10:30 pm pdt Friday... For 06z tafs. Marine
stratus deck has filled in offshore and along the coast and has
begun to infiltrate the inland valleys late this evening. Satellite
imagery shows clearing in the northerly flow farther offshore and
warrants close watch overnight. Otherwise, south to southwest
winds along the immediate coast have allowed fingers of stratus
to push into the north bay ksts and into the salinas valley
(ksns kwvi), but is struggling to advance through the golden
gate towards immediate sf bay (koak ksfo ksjc klvk). Breezy
onshore winds return tomorrow afternoon.

Vicinity of ksfo...VFR expected with patchy sct bkn CIGS possible
across the bay closer to koak oakland hills. Breezy onshore winds
return tomorrow afternoon.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to ksfo.

Monterey bay terminals... MVFR CIGS late this evening will
transition into borderline ifr CIGS early Saturday morning.

MVFR ifr bkn ovc CIGS will persist over monterey bay region
through mid to late Saturday morning. Light winds will become
occasionally breezy by Saturday afternoon.

Marine As of 10:17 pm pdt Friday... Split winds with northwest
flow in the northern and outer waters and south to southwest winds
along the coast through the weekend. Mixed sea state with a light
long period south swell and steeper wind driven fresh swell
through the weekend.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
