Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 256 AM PDT Wed Apr 21 2021
SYNOPSIS. Dry and seasonal weather returns Wednesday through Friday. Increasing clouds Saturday leading to a chance of rain Sunday. Lingering showers early Monday otherwise dry with a warming trend into the middle of next week.
DISCUSSION. as of 2:56 AM PDT Wednesday . Well defined upper low is now centered near Yosemite with any associated showers staying over the Sierra today. For the Bay Area the upper low has deepened the marine stratus with low clouds covering much of San Mateo and Santa Cruz county as well as the Central Coast. Drier northerly winds around the upper low has brought much drier air into the North Bay with mostly clear skies. The drier northerly winds will bring the most noted warming to the North Bay where 70s and lower 80s will be most likely to occur. Onshore winds for SF and the Central Coast will keep coastal areas mostly cloudy and cooler while 70s will return for the interior valleys of the East and South Bay after some cool temps on Tuesday.
For Thursday and Friday high pressure aloft will build bringing a dry and seasonal weather pattern. Onshore winds will keep a well defined marine layer in place along the coast with night and morning intrusions of low clouds and fog. Afternoon highs 60s coast with mainly 70s inland for the end of the work week.
Saturday will be a transition day as stronger onshore winds will ramp up ahead of incoming cold front. Look for increasing clouds and a cooling trend for Saturday afternoon.
Cold front and associated rainfall is still on track for Sunday. Still far enough out that timing could change but current model solutions suggest we'll see some rain for the North Bay as early as Sunday morning. Rain to spread north to south on Sunday, at a fairly good clip with steady rains associated with the surface cold front. Enough instability for plenty of post-frontal showers in northwest wind flow. Will have to assess t-storm potential in the coming days but for now those have been left out of the forecast. Latest qpf forecasts have trended down slightly but still above average confidence for a soaking rain. Bay Area rainfall estimates still on the order of 0.25-0.50 for most locations with higher potential coastal hills and lower amounts interior valleys. This is supported by model ensembles with deterministic and 50 member averages showing similar rainfall numbers.
A new drought monitor will be released later this week and the trends will be for more adverse drought impacts across the region and state. This storm will have little overall impact on the long term drought. However, confidence is increasing that most of the Bay Area will see soaking rains Sunday into early Monday. At the very least this will put a pause into the onset of fire season as fuel moisture readings are trending towards historically dry values. So from an impacts stand point this will bring beneficial rains and if the current timing holds up the roadway impacts would be mostly confined to Sunday traffic. For weekend planning, Saturday will be the better day for outdoor plans. Snow levels will be dropping in the Sierra so trans-Sierra passes will be impacted by snow for return travel later Sunday into Monday. All locations will notice cooler daytime highs Sunday into Monday.
Any lingering showers Monday should end early though official forecast will hold onto some low precip chances into Monday evening. Drying and modest warming trend Tuesday into Weds of next week as high pressure builds and the main storm track shifts north of the Bay Area.
AVIATION. As of 10:42 PM PDT Tuesday . For the 06Z TAFs. The scattered showers over the East Bay are slowly dissipating. Scattered drizzle is still being observed down the San Mateo coastline and around the Monterey Peninsula. Winds have finally reduced compared to this afternoon, but remain breezy. Cigs are mostly between 1000 and 1500 feet, with a few terminals varying just above or below that. However clouds remain patchy so terminals in the North Bay are VFR with MVFR over the SF Bay and south of that. Isolated IFR is possible over night, but more widespread MVFR is expected as winds continue to subside. Models are trending for a later clearing of clouds for a brief window of VFR conditions Wednesday afternoon with a much more traditional seabreeze expected. Clouds return Wednesday evening with models hinting at MVFR levels.
Vicinity of KSFO . Winds continue to move in onshore spilling stratus over the southern SF Bay. Cigs currently bouncing around between 1100 and 1400 feet for MVFR conditions. Possible periods of SCT clouds, but widespread OVC MVFR conditions expected overnight with breezy winds. Much for traditional seabreeze expected Wednesday afternoon around 15 kts. Cigs are expected to break up after 18Z, a little later, but VFR expected Wednesday afternoon. Winds subside Wednesday night with a return to MVFR conditions.
SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.
Monterey Bay Terminals . Cloud cover sitting over the terminals for IFR/MVFR conditions through the evening. Drizzle can still be expected closer to the coast into early Wednesday morning. Some clearing expected inland after 20Z, but coastal terminals will likely be socked in with MVFR cloud cover through the day. Widespread MVFR conditions return Wednesday night with a chance for IFR possible.
MARINE. as of 2:37 AM PDT Wednesday . Strong winds with gale force gusts continue over the northern outer waters creating fresh steep wind waves resulting in hazardous seas particularly for smaller vessels. Winds remain moderately strong elsewhere and gradually diminish with seas remaining hazardous for smaller vessels on Wednesday. A moderate northwest swell continues through the week. Chance for rain this coming weekend.
