Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 1105 PM PDT Sat Sep 19 2020

SYNOPSIS. Warm temperatures will continue through Sunday across the region. A mild cool down is forecast to follow during the first half the work week with another warming and drying trend expect late in the week. Dry conditions will persist for at least the next week.

DISCUSSION. as of 9:18 PM PDT Saturday . Surface high pressure over the eastern Pacific ridging into the Oregon coast brought warmer and drier northerly flow to the area today. Highs today were generally 5 to 9 degrees warmer than the day before. Stratus has cleared out of the Bay Area, though some reformation of stratus is expected late tonight as the northerly gradient relaxes. Smoke from fires to our north brought moderately unhealthful air quality this morning before improving some in the afternoon. Smoke will return tonight and tomorrow morning as the winds diminish but conditions should improve some late in the afternoon.

A few more degrees of warming is expected Sunday as weak upper level ridging moves in over the area. The ridge moves east Monday and Tuesday allowing for temperatures to level off or cool slightly. The next upper trough moves into the Pacific Northwest around Thursday with precipitation as far south as northwestern California. However it will bring cooler weather with better humidity recoveries for the burn areas.

Our focus will be what the upper trough does this weekend. The GFS deepens the trough into a cutoff low over the Great Basin. If this verifies there could be a potential offshore wind event over the North and East Bay Hills Friday through Sunday night. The ECMWF has a weaker offshore flow as the trough is more progressive. Right now there are large differences between the medium-range models so will have to wait for more model consistency in the days to come.

AVIATION. As of 11:05 PM PDT Saturday . for 06Z TAFS. Generally VFR for area terminals with some IFR around immediate Monterey Bay coast as stratus has filled in the bay. Winds are generally light with some breezy WNW winds around KSFO. Northerly flow above the surface has kept the marine layer in check from SF Bay northward. Still anticipating VFR/MVFR cigs overnight and into Sunday morning, with any developing cigs around 1000 feet. Northerly winds will drift smoke from Northern California into the North Bay in the early morning, but no major impacts to vis expected.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR. WNW winds weakening to under 10 kts. MVFR overnight as the marine layer struggles to rebuild, but still bringing a layer of cigs to the terminals around 11z. Strong northerly gradient should keep any stratus from moving onshore earlier.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to SFO, potential for smoke and haze aloft over the North Bay early Sunday morning impacting slant range visibility.

Monterey Bay Terminals . VFR at KMRY and KSNS but some stratus lurking in the bay which had covered the terminals earlier this evening. Fort Ord Profiler now showing a shallow marine layer approximately 1100 ft deep. Patchy fog developing overnight into early morning. Light to calm winds. Clearing expected by mid- morning Sunday. Moderate onshore flow for the afternoon.

MARINE. as of 08:55 PM PDT Saturday . Surface high pressure extends from the eastern Pacific into the Oregon coast. This will bring gusty northerly winds to the northern waters tonight through Monday. Elsewhere winds will decrease. Mixed seas will continue with a shorter period northwest swell and a moderate period south to southwest swell. A longer period southwest swell will arrive Sunday morning.
