Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Increasing northwesterly winds expected tonight in the wake of the departing cold front. This coupled with a moderately large northwesterly swell will produce hazardous conditions into the weekend across much of the coastal waters. The relatively large, long period northwest swell will continue through the weekend then gradually diminish through the first half of the work week. A larger northwesterly swell is forecast to move through the coastal waters Wednesday.

area forecast discussion
national weather service san francisco bay area
135 pm pst Fri nov 15 2019

Synopsis The mostly cloudy conditions from earlier today have
continued to transition to partly cloudy to mostly clear this
afternoon. High pressure will build over the region Saturday
through Monday with a warming and drying trend as light offshore
winds develop in the hills. Cooling conditions will arrive by
Tuesday as the ridge breaks down as the next front drops through
the bay area by Wednesday but the best rain chances stay over the
sierra and eventually southern california.

Discussion As of 1:35 pm pst Friday... Visible satellite
imagery continues to show a clearing trend throughout much of the
region this early afternoon. Earlier this morning, some very
spotty light rain showers bought a trace to a one-hundredth of an
inch or two to parts of the north bay. High temperatures this
afternoon will warm to low to mid 60s along the coast and middle
60s to low 70s for interior locations. These values equate to
near-normal along the coast to around 2-6 degrees above normal
across the interior.

The national blend of models is suggesting another opportunity
for some low clouds and patchy fog for coastal shoreline
locations tomorrow morning. Additionally, some light northerly
winds will develop overnight and into early tomorrow across the
higher elevations of napa and sonoma counties, as well as the east
bay. While these winds will be offshore, moderate relative
humidity recoveries are expected to keep fire weather concerns
minimal at this time.

Upper level ridge is expected to develop over california this
weekend, allowing for a warming trend to take place throughout the
region. Wouldn't be surprised to see some interior north bay
locations, parts of the santa clara valley near gilroy, and
interior monterey san benito counties hit the upper 70s and even
the low 80s for Sunday afternoon as both the GFS and NAM show 500
mb heights peaking around 588 decameters over the area (90th+
percentile for this time of year). Temperatures at the surface
will correspond to about 10 to 20 degrees above climatology.

Keeping an eye on potential fire weather concerns around the
middle of next week as an upper level low drops south from the
pacific northwest toward california. Confidence remains low at
this point in time as there remains plenty of differences between
models: the deterministic ECMWF drops the low center from the ca-
or border south to point reyes and continues south offshore; and
the GFS keeps the upper low center farther offshore. The san
francisco-winnemucca surface pressure gradients are currently
forecast to peak somewhere around the -7 to -10 mb range on
Wednesday night and into early Thursday. Will continue keep a
close eye on forecast trends over the next several days.

Precipitation chances for the san francisco bay area over the next
7 days will unfortunately remain on the low side. The best
opportunity of any sort of measurable rainfall (or snowfall) in
the golden state will be in parts of southern california as well
as the sierra nevada. Beyond this next week, the latest 12z ecmwf
ensemble mean has actually trended drier in 1-2 week period
compared to the 00z run with about 50% of the ensemble members
indicating a tenth of an inch or less of rainfall at sfo. Through
noon today, downtown san francisco has only observed 0.03" of rain
since the start of the water year on october 1. This marks the 8th
driest start to the water year on record since precipitation
records were established in the city in 1849. That said, the dry
start to the water year does not mean the entire year will end
below normal. We only need to look back one year ago -- downtown
san francisco also started off dry (0.21" from october 1 through
november 14, 2018), but ended above normal thanks to above the wet
conditions that arrived after the start of the new calendar year.

Aviation As of 10:00 am pst Friday... For 18z tafs. Broken low
clouds are slowly scattering out at this hour. Mainly clear skies
expected inland today with lingering scattered clouds expected
along the coast. A weak front will dissipate as it moves through
today. As high pressure begins to build overhead this evening, low
level moisture will result in some CIGS overnight. Confidence is
low. Generally light winds will persist this morning with west
winds developing this afternoon.

Vicinity of ksfo... MVFR CIGS around 2700-2800 feet will linger
through this morning then briefly scatter out early this
afternoon. A weak front will move across the region today. MVFR
cigs may return the evening with bases potentially lowering to
ifr overnight tonight. Light winds this morning becoming westerly
and breezy this afternoon.

Sfo bridge approach... Similar to ksfo.

Monterey bay terminals... MVFRVFR CIGS will scatter our shortly
becomingVFR for the remainder of the morning. Light winds this
morning becoming onshore this afternoon. Will see a return to
MVFR CIGS this evening with bases lowering to 1000-2000 feet
overnight.

Marine As of 8:56 am pst Friday... Light rain along a cold
front will occur this morning across the northern waters. Winds
will shift to the northwest today behind a cold front and
gradually increase through tonight. A relatively large, long
period northwest swell will increase this morning and persist
through Saturday. Wave heights around 10 feet with breezy to gusty
northwest winds will create hazardous conditions for small crafts
today through Saturday.

These are not intended to be fact, they are my opinions. 4) Small programs that generate result presented on a web page. Like any computer program, these may and in some cases do have errors. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
