Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 201 PM PDT Mon Apr 19 2021
SYNOPSIS. A cooling trend will continue into Tuesday with temperatures falling back to near seasonal averages for the remainder of the week. The weekend will bring cooler temperatures and increasing chances for precipitation from late Saturday or early Sunday through Monday.
DISCUSSION. as of 01:58 PM PDT Monday . The marine layer over the Central Coast has deepened today with stratus holding strong along the San Francisco Peninsula coastline down through the Monterey Bay region. Meanwhile, sky conditions have cleared inland with temperatures warming into the 60s and 70s away from the marine influences. Overall, maximum temperatures this afternoon will be cooler region-wide as the air mass aloft cools due to the flattening ridge.
Low clouds will once again penetrate inland overnight, especially around the Central Coast and into the Salinas Valley. However, expecting less widespread low clouds over the greater San Francisco Bay Area in general. This will be the result of increased northwest flow as a mid/upper level trough extends southward over the region. This too will allow for the cooling trend to continue into Tuesday afternoon with temperatures likely to drop back to near seasonal averages (lower 60s coast to low/mid 70s inland). Additionally, precipitation associated with this system is not anticipated to bring widespread rainfall to the region. Little change likely through mid/late week as troughing over the West maintains near seasonal temperatures with periods of night/morning low clouds.
Additional cooling is then expected on Saturday as an upper level low approaches the Pacific Northwest. As the system deepens and drops down the West Coast, forecast ensembles continue to indicate increased potential for widespread light to moderate rainfall across northern and central California from either late Saturday night or Sunday through Monday. Given we are still five to six days out, will remain guardedly optimistic and continue to monitor the latest forecast data in the coming days.
AVIATION. As of 11:30 AM PDT Monday . For the 18Z TAFs. Most inland sites VFR, with coastal sites at MVFR/IFR. Improvements to VFR for coastal sites should be seen by 19-20Z. KMRY could see MVFR until 20Z. VFR conditions around the area after 21Z and lasting through 06-08Z tonight. W/NW winds breezy this afternoon, around 10-15kts. Gusts between 20-25 kt possible, generally, through early tomorrow morning with stronger gust potential for SFO. Winds will remain light to moderately breezy through the night for most areas, preventing FG/BR for KSTS/KAPC Tuesday morning.
Vicinity of KSFO . Satellite shows cloud deck mixing out quickly, with skies FEW-SCT at 080-013. Skies will clear up this afternoon. W/NW winds will increase this afternoon to 20-25+ knots lasting through Tuesday evening. Strongest gusts will be from 09-12Z this morning, with models hinting at G30kts. Will be monitoring for AWW criteria. Winds will relax to 15G20kts for the remainder of Tuesday. Low clouds will return tonight, with prevailing deck SCT010-015.
SFO Bridge Approach . Stratus deck will fill in from 09-16Z, with more confidence for SCT-BKN cigs at 010-015.
Monterey Bay Terminals . The marine layer is about an hour away from scattering out, with KSNS seeing SCT013 already. VFR conditions expected this afternoon before low clouds return this evening and tonight. Light winds this morning increasing this afternoon to around 15 kt. Breezy conditions may linger into the evening.
MARINE. as of 11:28 AM PDT Monday . Northwest winds will increase through the day as a disturbance moves southward from the Pacific Northwest into northern California. Gale force gusts are expected to develop over portions of the coastal waters starting with the Big Sur Coast by late this afternoon before winds increase over the northern waters this evening and persist into Tuesday. These winds will produce steep wind waves resulting in hazardous seas conditions, particularly for smaller vessels. Moderate northwest swell through the period along with a lighter longer period southerly swell.
