Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 318 AM PST Sun Dec 3 2023

Synopsis
Showers diminish today then drying with a warming trend early this week. Patchy dense fog will also be possible Monday and Tuesday mornings. Shower chances return Wednesday through Friday, with the potential for accumulating mountain snow.

Discussion
Upper level ridge will gradually amplify early this week with drier and warmer weather. Showers will diminish and shift northward through the day today. Snow levels remain very high above 7,500 and no snow is expected to and above pass level. A trough from the eastern Pacific will approach the area late Tuesday and move through Wednesday with shower chances returning.
Best chances will be over the mountains and foothills north of Interstate 80 where from 0.25-0.50 inches will be possible, less than 0.10 inches is expected at most Valley locations. Snow is not expected up to and above pass levels with high snow levels from 7,500-8,000 feet.

Patchy fog is possible at times Monday and Tuesday mornings over much of the Sacramento and northern San Joaquin valleys with Monday morning having the greatest potential for widespread dense fog. Some increase in cloud cover could limit fog Tuesday.

Afternoon highs today will be in the low to mid 60s throughout the Valley. Temperatures on Monday and Tuesday will warm into the mid to upper 60s.

.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Thursday THROUGH Sunday)...
Another short wave trough progged across interior NorCal Thursday in WNW flow aloft. Bulk of dynamics and associated light precip look to be north of I-80. Drier weather sets in Friday/Saturday as EPAC upper ridging builds inland. Some morning valley fog may occur. Forecast uncertainty increases Sunday as models diverge with progression rate of upper ridge. NBM leans towards EC with faster progression, allowing weak short wave to bring some light QPF to portions of the CWA Saturday night into Sunday.
