Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Moderate to locally breezy northwest winds will persist tonight across the waters. Gusty afternoon and evening winds are expected today over the san francisco bays. These winds will generate steep fresh swell resulting in hazardous seas conditions for smaller vessels. Winds will ease along the coast and over the southern waters tomorrow. They will also gradually turn southerly across the inner coastal waters tomorrow and Saturday. Locally stronger winds will persist over the northern outer waters into the weekend. Light southerly swells will continue into the weekend.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Francisco Bay Area 518 PM PDT Thu Aug 6 2020

SYNOPSIS. Increased clearing this afternoon will allow some warming relative to yesterday though below normal temperatures continue this afternoon. A warming trend is expected from Friday through the weekend. Little intraday change near the coast aside from in the marine layer.

DISCUSSION. as of 02:00 PM PDT Thursday . A poorly defined 582-583dm low pressure system is directly over the Bay Area and Central coast early this afternoon. This system is flanked by equidistant 595dm H5 high pressure ridges, one to the SE over Texas, the other to the NW in the ENE Pacific. This feature is the weakest of the 3 and behaving moreso as an extension of a deeper trough aligned along the Pacific coast from Anchorage Alaska southward to Baja California. The Ford Ord and Bodega Bay profilers showed the marine layer deepening to roughly 3500 feet this morning. This is roughly the maximum depth before the cap of the marine layer is broken by cool air advection aloft eroding the vertical temperature gradient and an increase in turbulence aloft at these altitudes. Consequently, visible satellite imagery shows rapid clearing of the marine layer along and just behind the weak surface frontal boundary moving SSE from the northwest as cold air advection, dry air entrainment, and increased turbulence erode the marine layer. As such, increased insolation this afternoon from the clearing post frontal skies has contributed to warmer temperatures inland despite the cooler air aloft, with 1PM temperatures roughly 6-12 degrees warmer this time yesterday north of the Santa Cruz mountains. Areas south of the Santa Cruz mountains are inversely (paradoxically?) running 3 to 8 degrees cooler in response to the cold front/cloud clearing not yet reaching that region. All that said, temperatures overall are 2 to 10 degrees below normal for this time of the year -- not a big surprise with a trough overhead.

For tonight, this is still a summer night along the Bay Area and Central Coast, so expect to see some fledgling reformation of the marine layer from the remnant moisture of the last marine layer along the immediate coastline and just inland. Short term models suggest the lingering trough overhead may also once again perturb the marine layer and bring drizzle alongshore, however, the best chance for that was last night into this morning.

Looking ahead, the parent trough feeding the weaker low over our region will continue to push downstream and into central Canada. The weaker low over our region will then remain quasistationary over the next several days as the flanking ridges keep it in place. High pressure will gradually expand and advect in warmer and drier air to the region between today and the weekend, bringing a slight to locally moderate warming trend for the inland to extreme inland locations. Nearshore areas will see little day over day change through the next several.

AVIATION. As of 5:15 PM PDT Thursday . for 00z TAFs. VFR conditions to prevail through early evening north of the Monterey Bay region. 00Z satellite imagery shows clearing from north to south along the coast north of San Francisco, which should delay inland development of MVFR ceilings in the SF Bay Area until 04-05Z at the earliest. Monterey taf sites will likely see MVFR ceilings by 02-03Z. Locally breezy early evening onshore winds will subside by late evening.

Vicinity of KSFO . VFR conditions through early evening with MVFR ceilings expected to develop by 04-05Z. Breezy W/NW winds this evening of 15 to 20 kt with gusts 25 to 30 kt expected. Clearing expected by 17Z Friday.

SFO Bridge Approach . Similar to KSFO.

Monterey Bay Terminals . MVFR cigs likely to redevelop by 02-03Z, with IFR conditions late tonight into early Friday. VFR conditions will be slow to develop on Friday, especially at KMRY. Onshore winds 10-15 kt early this evening, then decreasing.

MARINE. as of 02:00 PM PDT Thursday .
