Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 237 AM PST Sat Dec 2 2023
Synopsis
Precipitation chances continue today through Sunday morning; latest precipitation amounts have trended up. Drying and warming trend expected early next week before shower chances return Wednesday through Friday.
Discussion
Another round of mountain snow and rain is in store for today across the mountains, foothills and Northern Sacramento Valley.
Recent runs of models continue to provide more moisture for the area, increasing the expected precipitation totals for this weekend's event. Precipitation will begin early this morning in the Northern Sacramento Valley, foothills, and the Northern San Joaquin Valley. Mountain snow picks up later this morning and snow levels increasing through the afternoon should keep amounts suppressed at pass levels. For today, the NBM has a 20-40% chance of snow amounts to exceed 2" at pass levels across I-80 and Hwy.
50. For areas south of Hwy. 50, the NBM shows a 20-50% of exceeding 4" through Sunday morning. Generally, WPC forecasts show 3-7" of snow forecasted across the Central Sierra and with highest amounts in areas above 7000 feet. With the higher amounts being in areas of higher elevation, the Winter Storm Severity Index remains at the lowest winter weather impact level and general winter weather driving conditions expected.
Regarding rainfall, rain will be in the Northern Sacramento Valley and foothills with light sprinkles in the Southern Sacramento Valley. Amounts will be greatest in the Coastal Range and Northern Sacramento Valley with NBM probabilities showing 60-85% of exceeding 0.75" from Redding northward and 20-45% in the foothills. Overall, precipitation slowly tapers off Sunday morning and ends Monday morning as upper-level ridging begins to dominate the area, keeping the area dry through early next week.
Afternoon highs today will be in the 50s and low 60s throughout the Valley and 40s and 30s in the foothills and mountains.
Temperatures warm after today and by Monday will be in the low to mid 60s in the early portions of next week.
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday)...
Ensembles and clusters indicate that a trough from the eastern Pacific will pass through NorCal from Wednesday into Friday with light showers possible mainly over the mountains and for areas north of Interstate 80. Late Thursday night and Friday may represent the best chance of a bit more significant precipitation over the Sierra. Snow levels will start out quite high above 7,000 feet Wednesday into early Thursday, but lower down to 4,500 feet Friday. High temperatures will gradually cool from the low to mid 60's to the upper 50's by Friday for Valley locations.
AVIATION
VFR/MVFR conditions are expected to continue for the next 24 hours over TAF sites. Light showers will develop Saturday morning over much of the area with brief vis down to 5SM and ceilings to 1,500 feet. Surface wind gusts generally below 12 kts.
