Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1140 AM PDT Fri Mar 20 2026
KEY MESSAGES
- Slight decrease in temperatures this weekend but temperatures continue to be 10 to 20 degrees above normal. Daily record highs will be possibly again through mid week.
- Breezy winds Sunday western side of Sacramento Valley and again next Thursday otherwise dry and hot weather continues.
DISCUSSION
Next 7 days
The strong upper level high pressure will move off to the east a bit this weekend as some energy pushes into the Pacific Northwest. This will bring slightly cooler temperatures this weekend but still very much above normal with normals from 65 to 70 and highs still from the mid to upper 80s. The energy moving across PacNW will bring a breezy period to the west Sacramento Valley Sunday but will be well below advisory criteria but will continue to dry out fuels. Fire weather concerns are minimal with this, for now. The upper ridge does build back to the west once again early in the week, and even being on the western side of it, it still will bring unseasonable temperatures. Hottest conditions will continue to be from Sacramento southward closer to the base of the ridge. Daily record highs will once again be possible to likely in Sacramento, Modesto and Stockton through mid week.
If you are outside or planning outdoor activities this weekend into next week, please remember to drink plenty of water and wear sunscreen. As this is an anomalous heat event, individuals may not be fully acclimated to the emerging heat. Local waterways are also running very cold due to snowmelt.
AVIATION
VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours.
Surface winds below 12 kts and generally from the north. Chances (10-20%) of patchy mist/MVFR conditions in the Central Valley Saturday morning, generally between 11Z and 16Z Saturday.
STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
None.
