Synopsis for the central california coast and bays including the Monterey bay..Greater farallones...and cordell bank national marine sanctuaries... Moderate to locally breezy northwest winds will persist tonight across the waters. Gusty afternoon and evening winds are expected today over the san francisco bays. These winds will generate steep fresh swell resulting in hazardous seas conditions for smaller vessels. Winds will ease along the coast and over the southern waters tomorrow. They will also gradually turn southerly across the inner coastal waters tomorrow and Saturday. Locally stronger winds will persist over the northern outer waters into the weekend. Light southerly swells will continue into the weekend.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 241 PM PDT Thu Aug 6 2020

SYNOPSIS. Warming trend through the weekend, turning above normal by Saturday. A slight chance of mountain thunderstorms from Friday into early next week.

DISCUSSION. A weak trough continues to move through interior NorCal today. Temperatures this afternoon are similar to yesterday afternoon except in the Delta influenced region where temperatures are around 4 to 8 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. This is due to a weakening of the onshore flow as the upper trough is beginning to split over the west. Temperatures will peak in the upper 80s to mid 90s in the Valley and 60s to 80s in the mountains. Overnight lows will also be warmer tonight, especially in the northern Valley and foothills where temperatures could be 5 to 10 degrees warmer.

The trough continues to split tomorrow with a weak trough remaining over California as the main jet moves through the PacNW. This will cause temperatures to warm another few degrees across the area. A moderate Delta Breeze overnight will keep low temperatures mild in the southern Sacramento Valley and northern San Joaquin Valley through the weekend. Models indicate enough moisture and instability with this trough for a chance of isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening over the Sierra crest, mainly south of I80.

Ensembles indicate the weak trough will slowly cut off and slightly retrograde off the central coast through the weekend. This will allow heights to increase over NorCal, causing temperatures to continue to warm over the weekend to around 5 to 10 degrees above normal. Saturday temperatures will be around 5 degrees warmer than Friday, warming another 2 to 5 degrees Sunday. Moderate heat risk is expected in the northern Sacramento Valley on Sunday as highs reach 100 to 107 degrees and lows remain in the lower 70s. The rest of the Valley will peak in the upper 90s with 70s to 90s in the mountains and foothills. At this point, models suggest there could be enough moisture wrapping around the cutoff for a weak chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms through the weekend over the high Sierra. HEC

EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Monday THROUGH Thursday). Broad trough pattern to continue offshore of the West Coast for much of the upcoming week. Temperatures should cool to near normal levels, as at least weak periods of onshore flow continues. Also cannot rule out a few isolated thunderstorms near the crest Monday and Tuesday in weak upper level Col region. Westerly flow is forecast to increase by mid-week which should push moisture east of the area.

AVIATION. VFR for the next 24 hours. Surface winds generally less than 12 kts. Local southwesterly surface wind gusts from 20-30 knots Carquinez Strait/West Delta vicinity.

STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
