Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 1035 PM PST Fri Feb 26 2021
SYNOPSIS. Mild and dry weather expected through the weekend. Breezy north to east winds return tomorrow into Sunday morning. Unsettled weather is possible early next week, although the better chances are forecast late week.
DISCUSSION. The Evening Update: Weak/not consolidated energy will be diving SEwd into NV tonight, followed by stronger energy (vort max) diving into NV on Sat. It is this stronger energy that will kick up another round of Nly winds. WAD criteria seem to be problematic with the NAM MOS guidance indicating possible sustained WAD criteria around SAC/SCK and MOD. Trajectory of the NAM 925 mbs winds suggest that the Solano Co area will also be impacted by at least near WAD criteria winds.
Previous Discussion.
Early this afternoon, clear skies and mild temperatures were noted across much of the area. Some high clouds may stream over far northern California as a trough works its way towards the Four Corners region tonight and through the weekend. Precipitation stays north of the area today, although a stray light shower over northern Shasta County is not out of the question.
The aforementioned system will bring some breezy winds back to NorCal Saturday into Sunday, along with some slightly cooler temperatures than those of today. North winds in the Valley may gust up to 35 mph tomorrow, with the strongest winds in the foothills and the mountains later in the evening through Sunday morning. Mountain areas may see gusts from 35 to 45 mph. A Wind Advisory is not anticipated at this time, although any lightweight loose objects could be blown around and driving a high profile vehicle may be difficult at times.
Ridging then moves over the area again on Sunday with lighter winds and warming temperatures returning. While ensemble guidance is still varied, latest deterministic guidance looks to favor a closed low developing off the coast and moving south, leaving NorCal dry for the beginning of next week. Will need to continue to assess this latest forecast, but for now have left low end PoP chances for the northern mountains, Western Plumas County, and the Sierra.
EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Tuesday THROUGH Friday). There remains some uncertainty early next week with respect to precipitation chances. Both Euro and GFS ensemble means only advertise between zero and approx a tenth of an inch. No matter the interpretation -- dry vs very light rain -- little to no precipitation-related impacts are expected in northern California early next week. Highs are forecast to be at or slightly above early March climatological normal values.
Models continue to hint at better rain and snow chances late next week and next weekend. Still too early to evaluate potential impacts, but will keep an eye on trends. Climate Prediction Center 6-10 and 8-14 day precipitation outlooks do have northern California with favored odds of above normal precipitation at that time. // Rowe
AVIATION. VFR conditions next 24 hours with localized northerly wind gusts of 15 to 20 kt between 22Z Friday and 03Z Saturday. Northerly winds will increase and become gusty during the day on Saturday.
STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. None.
