Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 1043 AM EST Mon Dec 11 2023

SYNOPSIS
After a bout of wintry weather this morning, a drier start to the workweek will soon follow by the early afternoon hours with high pressure building in today and tonight. Conditions will likely remain dry Tuesday into Saturday with temperatures warming slightly into the weekend as high pressure lingers around the Mid- Atlantic.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/
Mid-morning update: The primary precipitation shield associated with last night's system has progressed well off to our north and east as low pressure tracks into the Gulf of Maine. As a result, conditions are dry this morning to the east of the Allegheny Front. Along and west of the Allgheny Front, a few upslope snow showers will remain possible through the early afternoon hours. However, little to no additional accumulation is expected there. As a result, all Winter Weather headlines have been canceled
Previous discussion follows

Winds are expected to pick up again further this morning into the afternoon hours. A tightening pressure gradient will situate itself over the Mid-Atlantic as a result of incoming high pressure nearby coupled with the departing low pressure system. Gusty northwest winds will develop again this morning, gusting 25 to 30 knots at times throughout the area with 35 to 40 knot gusts possible across the higher terrain of the Blue Ridge. Winds will begin to gradually decrease by this evening. Highs for today will settle into the upper 20s for the Alleghenies with upper 30s to mid 40s further east.
Gusty winds will allow wind chills to drop down into the teens for the highest elevations, with 20s and low 30s for the lower elevations. Overnight lows tonight will drop down into the upper teens for some of the western areas to the 20s elsewhere.

SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/
High pressure is expected to continue and reinforce into Tuesday with winds diminishing and dry conditions expected. Highs for Tuesday afternoon will be 3 to 5 degrees warmer compared to today.
Lows for the overnight hours will drop down into the 20s to low 30s for most areas. Wednesday will feature some similarities to Tuesday with mostly dry conditions, a few more high clouds may swing through the day. Winds will be elevated once more, mainly north of I-66 with northwest gusts 15 to 20 knots at times throughout the afternoon.
Lows will drop down into the teens for the Allegheny Front with 20s expected further east, even along the shorelines.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/
High pressure dominates across the region, maintaining dry and seasonal conditions late week into the weekend. Cooler highs on Thursday in the 40s, becoming upper 40s to low 50s Friday through the weekend. Still cold Thursday night as lows drop to the upper teens to 20s, then nighttime temps moderate to the upper 20s to 30s Friday night into the weekend.

The next system to impact the region could come late next weekend into the start of the following week. The GFS and ECMWF develop a coastal low over/near the Southeast states, then move the low north in vicinity of the Mid-Atlantic. However, the forecast is very uncertain due to significant timing/intensity discrepancies between the models.

AVIATION /16Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/
Gusty northwest winds will continue through the afternoon and early evening hours, gusting 20 to 30 knots at times before diminishing. VFR conditions will build in after the morning hours and continue through Wednesday, with lighter winds expected Tuesday and early Wednesday before gusty northwest winds return for most of the terminals.

VFR conditions are expected Thursday and Friday as high pressure dominates. Northwest winds Thursday could gust up to 15KT in the afternoon, then winds become west on Friday.

MARINE
Gusty northwest winds will continue through portions of the today. A Gale Warning remains in effect for all the waters through the early afternoon. SCA winds will likely follow shortly behind for later this afternoon and into the early evening. High pressure will be nearby Tuesday into Tuesday night. Winds will increase Wednesday as a result of a dry cold front moving through, SCA winds will be likely for the afternoon and early evening hours.

A brief period of borderline SCA conditions is possible Thursday afternoon as high pressure builds into the region. Northwest winds could gust 15-20KT, then decrease quickly Thursday night. High pressure is forecast to be overhead on Friday, producing favorable marine conditions.
