KEY MESSAGES
- Dry weather with near normal temperatures today, with chances for AM Valley fog on Wednesday
- Light showers and thunderstorms over the northern Sac Valley, foothills, and mountains on Wednesday
- Gusty north to east winds Thursday through Saturday, with a warming trend through the weekend and the potential for Valley highs in the 80s.
DISCUSSION
...Today-Tuesday...
Dry conditions prevail today with near-normal temperatures and light winds. Tonight into Wednesday morning, there is a 20-40% chance of patchy fog development across portions of the southern Sacramento and northern San Joaquin Valleys. However, increasing cloud cover associated with an upcoming system may hinder fog development.
Wednesday
A trough is expected to move through Northern California on Wednesday bringing light showers and a 10-20% chance of thunderstorms to the northern Sacramento Valley, foothills, and mountains. Precipitation amounts are expected to be around 0.10 inches or less for most areas, with locally higher amounts up to 0.25 to 0.50 inches across portions of eastern Shasta County and near Lassen Park. Generally 1 to 2 inches of snow are possible along the highest peaks (locally higher near Lassen), with lighter amounts at pass level.
...Thursday-Sunday...
Dry conditions return on Thursday as the trough drops down and deepens into the Great Basin. This will lead to gusty north to east winds developing Thursday through Saturday, with the strongest winds on Friday. NBM probabilities of wind gusts greater than 40 mph sit around 50-80% on Friday west of I-5 in the Sacramento Valley and over the mountains. Probabilities for gusts greater than 30 mph are 60-80% on Thursday and Saturday.
Warmer weather is expected during this period as well, with above-normal high temperatures Friday into the weekend. Afternoon high temperatures will reach into the 70s in the Valley and foothills this weekend, with 50s and low 70s in the mountains. NBM indicates a 50-80% chance of high temperatures reaching 80 degrees across portions of the northern and central Sacramento on Sunday, with the highest chances anticipated across the northern Sacramento Valley.
AVIATION
Predominantly VFR conditions expected through 06Z Wednesday.
After 7Z, patchy MVFR conditions due to mist and low clouds will be present in the southern Sacramento Valley between 08-15Z Wednesday. A weak weather system will bring light precipitation to the northern Sacramento Valley, foothills, and mountains after 15Z Wednesday. Additionally, there is a 10-20% chance of thunderstorms for the aforementioned areas between 15Z Wednesday and 06Z Thursday. Surface winds generally less than 12 kts next 24 hours.
