SYNOPSIS
A weak low pressure system and warm front will push across the region today. High pressure will bring milder weather for the start of the weekend. A potent storm system and cold front will sweep through Sunday and Sunday night. Cooler high pressure will return early next week.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/
The first accumulating snow of the season for many has ended and we now transition to more of a quiet period for the next few days before an active end to the weekend. While it will be mainly dry for the rest of today, it should remain mostly cloudy as the shortwave slowly moves out. Perhaps a few flakes may fall in the higher elevations of the Poconos and NW NJ over the next few hours, but not expecting any accumulations.
Skies clear out as the evening goes on as an upper level ridge builds in. Winds will go light and variable, though with some cloud cover for part of the evening, we won't have ideal radiational cooling conditions for the entire night. It will still be chilly though, with temperatures getting down into the low to mid 20s. Some spots, primarily within Delmarva, urban Philadelphia, and the coast, should stay at/above the 30 degree plateau.
For tomorrow, heights continue to rise as the ridge axis approaches the Mid-Atlantic. High pressure to the south will gradually slide offshore, fostering in a light southerly flow. This will result in warming and with large scale subsidence with the approaching ridge, skies will be mostly sunny. Temperatures will be in the upper 40s/low 50s, with some spots in Delmarva getting into the mid 50s.
SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/
High pressure slides off the coast with west to southwest flow developing Friday and Saturday, with heights building through Saturday before they start falling ahead of a very potent trough. Through the short term, this means dry weather except possibly right near the end of Saturday night, when some showers ahead of the next system may start overspreading the region.
More sunshine will be had on Friday with the ridge building in and high pressure still fairly close by, with temperatures jumping about 10 degrees above readings expected today. However, by Saturday, the heights falling and developing onshore flow combined with the existing relatively cool stable air over the land appears to result in a wedge of cooler air, which will send the advecting warm air initially over the top on Saturday. Thus, expect Saturday to have temps not a whole lot higher if not nearly the same as Friday. This warm advection over the cooler surface should help result in a noticeably cloudier day as well, especially when combined with higher clouds advecting in from the west. As this warm front starts to buckle northwards late Saturday night, some showers or drizzle may develop, but otherwise, mostly dry conditions expected. Lows at night will also jump considerably thanks to the increased cloud cover and developing south to southeast flow, with lows Friday night closer to freezing while lows Saturday night closer to 40.
LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
Potent storm system with strong surface cold front and upper level trough and deepening surface low will cross the region Sunday into Monday. Majority of the weather is likely Sunday night, when the low and front most likely crosses the area.
Strong southerly flow ahead of the system with retreating warm front may still bring some showers or drizzle early Sunday, with winds picking up as the front lifts northward. Gusts of 25-35 mph look likely on land with higher over the water. Temps will rise into the low 60s for much of the area. Then the strong front will bring a band of heavier rain and possibly some embedded thunder, perhaps even a line of low-topped squalls, across the region Sunday night. This could result in widespread wind gusts of 40-50 mph, perhaps locally higher, along with isolated issues with flooding. Temps will crash with the cold front as well, dropping fairly quickly into the 40s, with 30s and some mixed rain/snow in the Poconos. Certainly looks like quite a wild ride Sunday night.
Monday, winds will gradually die down as the system pulls further east, though the upper trough may keep some showers (mixed with snow in the Poconos) lingering. High pressure then builds back in for several days of cool but dry weather Tuesday through Thursday next week.
