SYNOPSIS
Temperatures will continue to warm today into the weekend as Arctic high pressure weakens. Mountain snow showers will taper then end this morning, while the remainder of the region will be dry through Sunday. A weak low pressure system may approach from the south Monday with an additional cold front set to follow by the middle of next week.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/
An upper level trough will move across the region today. A couple of snow showers in the mountains this morning will likely taper and end during this afternoon. Snow accumulations will likely be an inch or 2 by mid-morning. Dry conditions elsewhere this morning and everywhere this afternoon through tonight.
Highs teens in the mountains and upper 20s to middle 30s elsewhere.
SHORT TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/
High pressure will move in from the Ohio/Tennessee River Valleys Saturday. This high will settle across the Appalachains Saturday before drifting east Sunday as another wave of low pressure approaches from the lower Mississippi/Tennessee River Valleys. Temperatures are expected to modify evenmore into Sunday and Sunday night. Highs Saturday will reach the 30s and 40s for most locations with 20s over the mountains. Lows Saturday night will fall back into upper teens and low to mid 20s. Highs Sunday will push into the 40s with 20s and 30s over the mountains.
LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/
On Monday, a broad trough is expected over central and eastern Canada/CONUS, with a longwave high pressure crest building into the west coast eroding against a strong upper low over California and Arizona. High pressure at the surface will keep most of our area dry through midweek, with the exception of upslope snow Tuesday and Wednesday. Temperatures will run near to above normal Monday through Wednesday under W/SW flow, with highs in the upper 30s to upper 40s, and possibly the low 50s on Tuesday.
For Thursday onward, there is uncertainty regarding a shortwave trough digging south through the Midwest and how far it gets. A stronger disturbance with a more southward track could bring precipitation to the area, but most ensemble members keep us dry.
AVIATION /09Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/
VFR conditions are expected through Saturday night. A weak trough moves through the area tonight, causing winds to turn westerly. Winds west/northwest today with gusts up to 15 kts.
Winds decrease Friday night into Saturday. Winds will become more west to southwest Saturday. Westerly winds Sunday.
VFR conditions are expected through the first half of next week.
Winds 5-10 kts prevail with SW flow Monday becoming W to W/NW Tuesday. Gusts to 15-20 kts are possible each afternoon.
MARINE
Winds may approach SCA levels this evening but it is marginal for the open Chesapeake Bay. Winds will diminish tonight into Saturday. There is a better chance for SCA Saturday night with a west to southwest flow. SCA conditions are possible Sunday in the northern portions of the Chesapeake Bay. Winds are expected to drop below SCA criteria across all waters Sunday night.
SW flow Monday becomes W to W/SW Tuesday. Winds 10-15 kts are expected over the waters. Gusts 18-20 kts are possible Monday afternoon through Tuesday afternoon and possibly into Tuesday evening.
