AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 245 PM PST Sun Dec 10 2023
SYNOPSIS
A weak front will bring light rain tonight to primarily Humbodlt and Del Norte counties. Dry weather is expected to return by late Monday and continue through much of the week with just a slight chance for rain Wednesday night. More rain is possible next weekend.
DISCUSSION
Moisture continues to increase with gradually thickening and descending clouds developing from north to south across Northwest California. Radar and satellite now show the quickly advancing cold front approaching the region with showers expected to start impacting Del Norte County in the next couple of hours. Only light accumulations are expected with the front expected to quickly weaken overnight with only a few tenths of an inch in Del Norte County to up to two tenths in Humboldt County. Elsewhere most areas will remain dry or at most get a few hundredths in coastal/northern Mendocino and Trinity counties. Rain showers will come to an end through the day on Monday.
Ridging will build back over the west coast Tuesday into Wednesday allowing temperatures to warm a few degrees across the region. A weakening trough will approach late Wednesday or Thursday bringing a slight chance of light rain to extreme northern portions of the area, but quickly rebuilding ridging behind this trough won't allow moisture to spread far inland. Dry conditions will then return for late week with increasing thickness values over the region. /RPA
AVIATION
A weak front will move through the region over the next several hours. Light rain will mostly be limited to Del Norte and Humboldt counties, starting at the coastal terminals this afternoon and last into the evening. Ceilings at coastal terminals will start out around MVFR levels and drop to high end IFR overnight. VFR conditions are expected around Ukiah with valley fog likely by early tomorrow morning.
MARINE
Steep westerly swell will continue to diminish while southerly wind waves continue into the evening. The overall sea state will continue to decline throughout the rest of the day and into tomorrow. Otherwise, only localized gusts over 20 kt are expected making an advisory for small craft unnecessary. Relatively light winds and low seas are forecast for the remainder of the forecast period. Northerly breezes may hit 20 kt in the lee of Cape Mendocino late tomorrow, but once again coverage of gusts over 20 kt remains low and does not warrant an advisory. After Tuesday, a light (15kt or less) easterly wind regime will unfold as high pressure approaches Northwest California.
