Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Sacramento CA 205 AM PST Sat Dec 9 2023
Synopsis
Quiet and generally seasonable weather prevails through the weekend and into the week ahead. Cold morning temperatures may lead to areas of Valley frost.
Latest GOES-West satellite imagery shows clear skies across interior NorCal as of early this morning. With clear skies and generally light winds, ideal radiational cooling is occurring, which will result in a cool start to the day today. Early morning low temperatures throughout the Valley are expected to drop into the low to mid 30s, with some instances of frost development possible. After the cold start, a quiet and mostly sunny day is anticipated to kickstart the weekend. Valley high temperatures rebound into the mid to upper 50s, with 40s to low 50s across the mountains.
Ridging aloft will continue to dominate the upper level pattern across the weekend and into the early week ahead. This will keep the overall weather pattern stagnant, with quiet weather, light winds, and a slight warming trend anticipated. Monday looks to see the warmest high temperatures with low to mid 60s in the Valley and low to mid 50s for the mountains. While heights aloft remain anomalously high, a weak shortwave does look to work through the upper level pattern by midweek. This will lead to a slight cooling trend Tuesday through the remainder of the week.
.EXTENDED DISCUSSION (Wednesday THROUGH Saturday)...
As the aforementioned trough exits interior NorCal, ridging aloft will once again build into the region through the end of the week.
Despite this, heights aloft remain only modestly high. As a result, temperatures look to stay largely unchanged with cool mornings and areas of frost and afternoon high temperatures rebounding to near normal. There are some hints within ensemble guidance that troughing off the coast will begin to impact the region moving toward next weekend, but details remain highly uncertain. Regardless, some semblance of a pattern change will be possible.
AVIATION
VFR conditions predominate next 24 hours except areas of MVFR (local IFR/LIFR) visibilities in the Central Valley south of KSAC thru 18Z. isolated MVFR/IFR/LIFR in fog development Saturday 05z through 16z. Surface wind gusts generally less than 12 kts except local northeast to east 25-35 kts higher elevations northern Sierra thru 20Z.
STO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
None.
