AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 402 AM PST Sat Feb 8 2025
SYNOPSIS
An isolated rain band will likely bring very light precipitation around sunrise. Otherwise, cold and dry weather will persist until around Wednesday.
DISCUSSION
After many days of rain and cloudy skies, dry and sunny weather finally prevailed yesterday. Clear skies in the evening have allowed for strong cooling overnight, even along the coast with low temperatures right around freezing. Interior temperatures have dropped below freezing, though high surface moisture has prevented most places form cooling any lower than the upper 20s. As of early this morning, a weak band of showers is slowly approaching shore.
This band is expected to have little to no accumulating precipitation, though cold surface temperatures may enable some snow flakes even along the coast.
Models consistently show the rain band currently offshore being the final gasp of precipitation with dry weather through the rest of the weekend. Drier air, clear skies, and gentle offshore flow will all promote cool conditions, with very cold conditions at night. By Sunday morning, most likely lows even along the coast will dip into the upper 20s. Many interior locations will see lows in the low 20s with conditions in the teens for Trinity County. Cold weather will present a significant risk to people without adequate shelter or heating.
There is high model agreement (over 90%) that moist conditions will return around mid next week, but the vast majority of models show only light to moderate rain with generally few impacts. Only about 20% of cluster ensemble members currently show any potential for heavier rain or snow. That said, cold weather leading up to the event will open the door to potentially impactful low elevation snow even if moisture is meager. The details of this next event will be watched closely in the coming forecast updates. /JHW
AVIATION
VFR has prevailed overnight at all TAF sites, although latest satellite imagery shows low cloud in many interior valleys.
Another shortwave slides southward down the West Coast this morning, with local radar indicating precipitation currently around 20 mi offshore of Trinidad, and IR satellite showing more bands of precip upstream. This shortwave should bring more light rain and possibly MVFR ceilings to the Redwood coast this morning. Skies are expected to clear this afternoon while northerly winds accelerate, then turning offshore late this evening. Offshore flow aloft should keep coastal terminals clear tonight.
MARINE
Winds have significantly diminished early this morning as another weak shortwave moves onshore. Stronger northerlies return late this afternoon and this evening behind this shortwave, first to the southern waters then spreading to the northern waters early Sunday morning. Winds continue to increase heading into Sunday evening, reaching around 20 to 30 kts with Gale Force gusts possible in the outer waters , then winds trend down heading into next week.
Southerlies are possible mid to late next week as another trough approaches the West Coast. Seas rapidly respond to the winds tonight and Sunday and will remain primarily locally generated. A few relatively small west swells are expected to move through the waters next week.
