Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA 930 PM EDT Thu Apr 22 2021

SYNOPSIS. Freezing temperatures expected overnight. Widespread rain will return Saturday with low pressure.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM FRIDAY MORNING/. Dry, quiet conditions expected overnight. Clearing sky will promote strong radiational cooling. Near to below freezing temperature is expected, thus a Freezing Warning remains in effect for Friday morning for areas where the growing season has already begun.

SHORT TERM /6 AM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/. High pressure and weak ridging will create dry conditions for Friday into the early portion of Saturday. Warm, moist advection amid rising heights generate a wave of clouds through the day Friday, otherwise expect a sunnier sky and temperature 10 degrees warming than Thursday's readings.

Warm, moist advection will continue Saturday ahead of a southern stream trough and its associated low lifting northeast out of the Central Plains. Rain chances will increase through the day, peaking during the evening hours as the trough begins crossing the region and becomes slightly negatively-tilted as it phases with the northern stream trough. Timing of precipitation arrival will dictate high temperature Saturday, with consensus that readings remain a few degrees below normal.

Precipitation will begin to dissipate west to east Sunday morning as the trough and low move east of the region, with high pressure filling in its wake. By Sunday night, the region will be dry once again under the influence of high pressure and weak NW flow. Weak cold advection and limited insolation will keep area temperature below seasonal averages Sunday.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. A significant pattern change is expected to start the next work week as models continue to show strong consensus on eastern U.S. ridge building. Expect significant warming and dry weather as the ridge and sfc high pressure dominate the region, with well above normal temperature by mid-week.

AVIATION /02Z FRIDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/. VFR is expected through the TAF period as a ridge of high pres builds across the rgn, though bkn diurnal CU cigs should occur as daytime convective temps are reached. Wind should gust up to 20kt Fri with daytime mixing and a sufficient sfc pres gradient.

Outlook. Restrictions in rain are expected Sat thru erly Sun with crossing low pres.
