AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 504 AM PST Fri Dec 8 2023

SYNOPSIS
Lingering showers through late this morning. Dry weather are expected over the region through Saturday as a high pressure build into the West Coast. A frontal system will bring a chance of precipitation for areas north of Cape Mendocino Sunday through early next week, mainly to Del Norte County.

DISCUSSION
Latest IR satellite imagery shows an upper-level ridge building into the West Coast downstream from the trough moving into the Intermountain West. Lingering showers occurring mainly over Del Norte and Humboldt counties will subsequently dissipate beneath the upper-level heights rising rapidly into this afternoon, which will support dry weather and chilly temperatures through Saturday. Areas of valley fog have developed overnight with a strong radiational cooling. This is expected to clear out during the morning. However, high clouds are expected to spread across the area during the afternoon through Saturday ahead of an approaching frontal system. Snow level will rise quickly to 6,000 to 8,000 feet MSL on Saturday afternoon as a warm front move toward the Pacific NW.

Saturday overnight into Sunday morning, weakening subtropical moisture plume along to a cold front over the Pacific NW drop south into NWRN California. This will bring an increase chance of precipitation to areas North of Cape Mendocino, mainly for Del Norte County. Rainfall total amounts are expected to range from few hundredths to a half of an inch. Snow level with this system will remain above 6000 feet. The precipitable water content is expected to range between 0.8 and 1.0 inch.

Heading into mid next week, dry weather and near to above normal temperatures are forecast as the upper-level heights rises over the Pacific NW, promoting offshore flow across the region. Looking at the tail end of the forecast period, and beyond, long range models are beginning to highlight the next chance for rain late next week but there remains a lot of uncertainty this far in advance.

AVIATION
Conditions have generally cleared to VFR overnight along the coast as showers have dissipated but lingering instability has inhibited any kind of shallow marine layer. Sporadic periods of MVFR are likely near lingering showers this morning, but otherwise VFR conditions are expected to prevail along the coast. At the same time, clearer and calmer conditions in the interior combined with recent rain have created widespread valley fog and low clouds. This has created IFR to LIFR conditions for most interior locations.
these ceiling should quickly lift this morning after sunrise.
Another round of low fog and clouds is likely for interior valleys tonight. /JHW

MARINE
A few isolated rain showers currently over the coastal waters will gradually dissipate this morning. In addition, the sea state is currently dominated by a mid period northwest swell up to 12 feet at 12 seconds. This swell will gradually decay through the day most likely dropping below 10 feet by late morning. Currently gentle northwest winds will persist with only locally higher winds fanning out south of Cape Mendocino with gusts up to 25 kts. Though such speeds could create conditions hazardous to small crafts, the coverage is too little to justify extending the current advisory.

Mostly calm conditions will persist through Saturday. Winds will turn south ahead of another front later this weekend, though current speeds look moderate at most with short period seas below 6 feet. A modest, mid period swell will arrive alongside the front mostly focused in the northern waters. NWPS shows heights near 10 feet at 13 seconds which could very briefly generate advisory conditions.
Otherwise, generally calm seas are forecast through mid next week.
