Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New York NY 1003 PM EDT Sat Apr 4 2020

SYNOPSIS. Weak high pressure briefly builds into the region tonight, moving off shore Sunday. A weak cold front moves through Sunday night. High pressure returns Monday and Tuesday. A series of frontal systems may impact the region Wednesday through Friday. High pressure builds back in for the weekend.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 AM SUNDAY MORNING/. Minor changes to the forecast were made. Raised low temperature forecast in the Pine Barrens Region as it will probably remain mostly cloudy, offsetting any radiational cooling that had occurred earlier. Might need to raise them further. Also added a chance of sprinkles over SE CT this evening as per latest radar trends.

Otherwise, a very weak gradient flow will be across the region through tonight. There is a weak surface trough expected to remain across the lower Hudson Valley into northern New Jersey. Weak warm advection and lift could produce light showers/sprinkles overnight. At this time will have a mention of sprinkles.

SHORT TERM /6 AM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY NIGHT/. The surface high remains Sunday, moving east late day and into Sunday night. Aloft weak ridging remains across the area. A weak shortwave and cold frontal boundary move through the ridge Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. There is little forcing ahead of and with the front, along with some low level moisture. Will maintain the slight chance probabilities Sunday afternoon and Sunday night.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. High pressure builds briefly across the region Monday resulting in sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s. Thereafter several weak systems are forecast to track across the region right through the end of the week, bringing scattered showers at times across the area. There is still some uncertainty with the exact timing and track of each system.

High pressure will then gradually build in late in the week and into the start of the following weekend with diminishing winds and dry weather expected. Temperatures on average will remain several degrees above normal through much of the long term, with temperatures trending cooler during the second half of the period.

AVIATION /02Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. Weak high pressure remains over the area into Sunday.

VFR, lowering to MVFR east and north of the city tonight, and potentially MVFR at times Sunday morning for the city terminals. There is a chance that the city terminals prevail at MVFR for several hours starting by around midnight. Not enough confidence to have this in the forecast at this time.

Light southerly winds this evening into Sunday.

OUTLOOK FOR 00Z MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY. Sunday night. Mainly VFR. Slight chance of evening showers. Monday-Tuesday. Mainly VFR. Slight chance of rain on Tuesday. Wednesday. MVFR or lower and rain possible. Thursday. Chance of MVFR in showers.

MARINE. Weak high pressure will be over the waters tonight and early Sunday before moving east Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. Winds will remain below SCA levels across the forecast waters through Sunday night. However, ocean seas remain elevated with an easterly swell, and will remain elevated into late Sunday evening as a cold front approaches. The ocean SCA was extended to 06Z Monday.

Below SCA conditions across the area water expected through the end of the week.

HYDROLOGY. No hydrologic impacts are expected through the period.

TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING. Based on what was observed with the high tide cycle this evening and model projections for the next high tide cycle, have issued a statement for the south shore back bays of Nassau and SW Suffolk Counties. Thinking that a few areas could just reach or slightly surpass minor flooding benchmarks Sunday morning. This would be more likely in Nassau County, but enough of a chance in SW Suffolk to include in the statement.

Breaking waves of 4 to 7 ft will be slow to subside through Sunday morning. Scattered areas of beach erosion and localized washovers are possible during the times of high tide along the Atlantic oceanfront.

EQUIPMENT. NYC NOAA Weather Radio Station KWO35 (162.55 MHz) is undergoing its final stages of testing, and is operating at full power.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
