AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 233 PM PST Fri Dec 1 2023
SYNOPSIS
Periods of moderate rainfall will impact northwest California this weekend through much of next week. The highest rainfall totals will likely occur in Del Norte County, with lighter totals expected southward toward Lake County. In addition, moderate southerly winds will impact exposed coastal ridges and and headlands.
DISCUSSION
A progressive quasi-zonal midlevel flow regime was present across the NERN PAC and adjacent PACNW. An embedded shortwave was also located offshore from coastal BC. Large-scale ascent was increasing downstream from that feature, and the southern periphery of the ascent is expected to impact NWRN CA later tonight into Saturday morning. Rainfall will intensify as a result, but impacts will mainly be relegated to beneficial precipitation accumulations. Winds are also forecast to become marginally gusty later tonight across Humboldt/Del Norte coastal headlands and exposed ridges...but gusts are not expected to reach advisory criteria. Model guidance indicates rainfall may remain moderate in intensity across Del Norte County going into Saturday afternoon, and that will be followed by another wave of ascent and rain during Sunday. Multi model guidance then shows a stronger more organized frontal system progressing east across the NERN PAC during Tuesday, and then moving onshore across WA/OR/NRN CA by Wednesday. More rain, locally moderate to heavy in intensity, will be probable with the advancing front. A pre-frontal coastal barrier jet will also aid in near-advisory southerly winds during Tuesday night across mainly Del Norte and Humboldt Counties.
AVIATION
Periods of showers will spread across NWRN CA during the next 24 hrs, with the heaviest activity expected late tonight into Saturday morning. Visibility and ceilings will fall into the IFR category during periods of heaviest rainfall. In addition, moderate southerly winds will impact KACV and KCEC later tonight, with marginal wind shear also noted in model forecast guidance.
MARINE
West-southwest winds will occasionally be gusty through the weekend, particularly across the northern outer waters. Those winds combined with elevated seas will continue to support a small craft advisory for marine zone 470. Otherwise, a series of larger mid- to long- period NW swells will fill in through the weekend. Seas will remain at or above 10 ft, with greater heights in the northern waters of around 13 ft. Waves will remain elevated into the middle of next week.
