AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 314 PM PDT Wed Jun 19 2024

SYNOPSIS
Dry weather is expected for the foreseeable future.
Interior temperatures will warm up toward the end of week with temperatures approaching 100 degrees in some interior valley locations Friday into Saturday.

DISCUSSION
Extensive stratus and fog has been clinging to the coastline from the Oregon border to Pt Arena today. Marine layer was quite shallow but should start to deepen tonight into Thu as a 500mb trough slowly moves across the area. With a deeper marine layer and steady northerly breezes, expect greater stratus and fog intrusion into the coastal river valleys over the next couple of nights and mornings. Increasing northerly winds offshore will result in coastal stratus and fog through the week with temperatures remaining near or below normal along the coast.

Otherwise, upper level troughing over the area will begin to break down on Thu and 850 mb temperatures will warm across the interior allowing some interior valleys to approach 100 degrees Friday into Saturday. Heat risk is forecast to increase to moderate levels by Friday and persist in Saturday when high temperatures are forecast to peak. Sunday will also be quite hot, especially in Trinty county where max temperatures around 100F are probable.

National Blend of Models (NBM) remains consistent with interior temperatures trending down Sunday into early next next week as another trough approaches the area, lowering 500mb heights and diminishing 850mb temperatures. The trough next week is looking sharper than the current trough and may bring showers to portions of Oregon and Washington and a dry frontal passage to our region.
This trough could once again bring strong and gusty NW winds into Mendocino and Lake counties next week. Right now, NBM probabilities for gusts to 30 mph or more are no more than 30% for this weekend and early next week. DB

AVIATION
Marine stratus clouds were more extensive and persistent along the NW Coast today...IFR conditions lingered into afternoon at ACV and CEC. There was brief partial clearing along a few sections of the coast. Inland areas were generally SKC. However, satellite imagery showed smoke/haze over inland mountain areas...especially Lake, NE Mendocino and southern Trinity Counties. Thursday morning: stratus will persist along the coast while some wildfire smoke will cover more of the area. /TA

MARINE
Northerlies continue to decrease into today, but will remain in small craft criteria for all zones except the northern inner waters. Each afternoon there will be a slight uptick in northerlies with the highest winds (still below gale conditions) occurring in the lee of Cape Mendocino. Coverage for the expansion fan will be sufficient to keep a small craft advisory in the southern outer waters through the end of the week; however, by this afternoon only a small portion of the southern inner waters, just south of the Cape, will have small craft winds. Due to this, the small craft advisory for the southern inner waters will expire this afternoon.
High resolution wind models and NBM indicate that the outer zones will remain in small craft conditions through the end of the week with another slight increase in winds into this weekend as a result of high pressure building into the region. Seas will remain steep through the week due to the winds, especially in the outer waters.
Two to three foot, long period westerly and southwesterly swells will continue through the waters into the end of the week. /JLW
