Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New York NY 547 AM EDT Tue May 11 2021

SYNOPSIS. High pressure will continue to build in through Thursday, with a surface trough moving through on Tuesday. Weak troughs of low pressure move through the area from Friday into the weekend, otherwise high pressure will largely dominate over the northeast. A warm front approaches for Monday.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/. Forecast is on track. This update accounts for the current observations and trends in sky cover, temperatures, and dew points.

Surface high pressure is building in from the west today with conditions expected to remain mostly dry through much of the morning and early afternoon. A mid-level trough and associated disturbance will approach the ares from the NW this afternoon.

At the surface, a low pressure system to the NW over Maine and SE Canada drags a weak cold front through the area during the afternoon. This tightens the pressure gradient over the area resulting in breezy conditions developing with gust upwards of 25mph. Though surface moisture will be limited, cold temperatures aloft with decent surface heating under partly cloudy skies may result in some weak instability showers by the afternoon. These should be fairly isolated. While it's not likely these will be strong enough to produce thunder, it's not out of the realm of possibility that there be a rumble of thunder with a stronger shower.

Highs will be in the low to middle 60s.

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/. Any showers that are in the area dissipate around or shortly after sunset. The cold front moves through the area with breezy NW winds continuing into the overnight. High pressure continues to build in with mid-level subsidence in the wake of the disturbance. This will allow for drying of the atmosphere and clearing skies overnight into Wednesday morning. Lows will be in the low to middle 40s. Some spots may drop briefly into the upper 30s.

Continued clear, dry, and breezy conditions are expected for Wednesday with winds gradually diminishing toward the later afternoon. Highs will be in the middle 60s.

Winds diminish substantially during the evening Wednesday and overnight with clear skies. Lows will be in the 40s, with warmer spots near the coast and cooler spots in the Interior.

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. The forecast remains mainly consistent with generally ridging across the area with a west to northwest flow, and weak shortwaves moving through the flow, and a split flow developing Friday. Meanwhile at the surface high pressure will be dominating through Sunday, and then moving off the Mid-Atlantic coast Monday as a warm front begins to approach. Much of the time will be dry, however, with the shortwaves and surface toughs developing, mainly in the afternoon Friday through Sunday there will be slight chance to chance probabilities for showers. Instability and CAPE is minimal, however, isolated thunderstorms will be possible. The best instability and CAPE develops for Saturday afternoon into the evening. Monday a warm front begins to approach from the south as return flow sets up.

Temperatures will be near seasonal normals through the extended period.

AVIATION /10Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/. High pressure remains west of the terminals into this evening. However a surface trough moves through the region this afternoon into early this evening.

VFR through the forecast period. There is a low chance of scattered showers mid afternoon into the early evening, with no impacts to ceilings or visibilities expected.

WNW flow under 10kt backs to a more westerly flow this morning, increasing to 10-15kt, with gusts 20-25kt developing late morning to around midday. In the afternoon sustained winds may be around 15kt for a few hours. Coastal terminals may also back more to the SW than forecast.

. NY Metro (KEWR/KLGA/KJFK/KTEB) TAF Uncertainty .

Winds at KJFK may be stronger and back more SW than forecast late Tuesday afternoon.

OUTLOOK FOR 06Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY. Late Tuesday night and Wednesday. VFR. Wednesday W-NW wind G20- 25kt. Thursday and Friday. VFR. Saturday. Mainly VFR. Chance of afternoon showers west of NYC.

Detailed information, including hourly TAF wind component forecasts, can be found at: http:/www.weather.gov/zny/n90

MARINE. Marginal SCA conditions still present on the ocean waters east of FII with seas near 5 ft. Seas slowly drop below 5 ft late morning with winds increasing as a pressure gradient over the area tightens. While winds may occasionally gust to 25 kts, it should remain occasional enough to remain under SCA threshold for all waters. Seas for the eastern ocean zones may briefly approach 5 ft late afternoon and early evening but will quickly subside. With the brief elevated swell and occasional nature of marginal gusts, opted to not issue a SCA for this afternoon/evening. Winds and seas should slowly diminish tonight. A few gusts to 25 kt may still be possible on the ocean waters into Wednesday morning. With generally a weak pressure gradient in place Thursday through Saturday winds and seas are expected to remain below SCA levels across all the forecast waters.

HYDROLOGY. No hydrologic impacts are expected through the weekend.
