Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Binghamton NY 626 AM EDT Sat Jul 27 2024

SYNOPSIS
High pressure over the area will promote mostly clear skies and dry conditions through Monday. High temperatures will trend much warmer later this weekend into early next week. The chance for showers and thunderstorms returns Tuesday and continues through the rest of the week.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/
620 AM Update...

Fog has filled in the river valleys across the twin tiers and should remain for the next couple of hours before dissipating.
No changes were made to the forecast in this update as everything remains on track.

150 AM Update...

High pressure continues to dominate the CWA with clear skies and light winds tonight. Some valley fog will develop as radiational cooling allows for temps to cool into the low 50s. NBM guidance was too warm for lows tonight so used NBM25% as the basis for the forecast with manual edits lowering temps in Steuben county.

Temperatures today will be warmer than yesterday as the center of the surface high moves overhead and the mid level ridge axis comes closer to the region. Highs in the upper 70s to mid 80s are expected. Some fair weather cumulus clouds will develop late this morning through the afternoon but with the center of the high overhead, we should still see mostly sunny skies. Canadian wildfire smoke is expected to filter into the region from the north this afternoon and evening, which should make for a very nice sunset. The smoke will be contained in the upper atmosphere so air quality at the surface will not be affected.

The ridge axis slides eastward Saturday night, bringing a return of WSW flow and WAA. Temps will fall into the mid to upper 50s and valley fog should develop.

Sunday will see a return of hot temperatures as the ridge axis moves east of the area and pumps warm southern air into the region. Highs are expected to be in the upper 80s to low 90s.
Skies will be mostly clear in the morning, with cumulus developing in the afternoon.

SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/
High pressure will be over our region Sunday night with a low pressure system off the New England coastline. The high pressure with mid-level ridging looks dominant through Monday night. However, some clouds and spotty precipitation may retrograde westward into portions of NE PA and the western Catskills Monday afternoon and evening. A warming trend should continue given the increasing moisture with weak southerly flow. Lows should nudge slightly higher into the 60's Sunday and Monday nights with highs well up into the 80's Monday.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/
The high pressure looks to be squeezed out by Tuesday with another trough of low pressure approaching from the west. Several disturbances should move through the base of the trough for the middle of next week. Plenty of moisture should be streaming northward into the region as well with modeled PW values from 1.5- 1.75 inches currently. Modeled instability and shear are on the lower end currently with soundings indicating more of a localized flooding threat if anything. The showers and thunderstorms look to keep highs in the 80's for most of next week with muggy lows in the 60's to near 70. The general pattern looks to keep several areas of low pressure diving southeast with plenty of moisture through the end of next week, keeping chances for showers and thunderstorms in the forecast through Friday.

AVIATION /12Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
VFR conditions expected across all terminals through the evening hours as high pressure sits overhead.

Increased moisture moving in from the SW during the evening and overnight hours will bring a chance for widespread fog across the area. Once again, ELM has the best chance to see IFR/LIFR restrictions. Fog formed in the river valleys this morning, but didn't quite make it to the ELM terminal. With the same radiational cooling and calm winds, expected dewpoints 5-6 degrees higher tonight should allow fog to develop at elm for several hours. ITH and RME also have a chance for IFR conditions thanks to the increased humidity. Confidence was high enough to include TEMPO groups at these three terminals in this set of TAFs. BGM has a signal for fog but confidence was too low to include it.

Outlook...

Sunday through Monday...VFR expected. Humidity may rise high enough for early morning valley fog formation Sun night.

Tuesday and Wednesday...scattered showers and thunderstorms and associated restrictions possible.

BGM WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
PA...None.
NY...None.
