Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boston/Norton MA 330 AM EDT Sat Apr 19 2025

SYNOPSIS
Warm and breezy weather conditions expected today, with scattered showers arriving later this afternoon and evening.
Drier and mild behind a cold front Sunday. Low pressure should pass by to our north Tuesday. High pressure then expected to linger nearby into Friday with above normal temperatures.

NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/
Key Messages:

* Very warm and breezy with high temperatures well into the 70s to lower 80s, despite filtered sun.

Persistent southwest winds will keep pushing warmer air towards our region. Despite some clouds today much of southern New England should get an early taste of summerlike warmth. The exception will be along the south coast, including the Cape and islands. Ocean temperatures are still in the mid 40s, which will prevent much of the immediate coast in the 60s, with some 50s possible across the Cape and islands due to more ocean exposure.

Mainly dry to start the day. A weak mid level shortwave and a accompanying surface trough ahead of an approaching cold front should help to generate scattered showers this afternoon into this evening. The forcing is not particularly strong, but there is modest precipitable water values later today. Not expecting a washout, but there is at least a chance for a few hundredths of rainfall across the western 2/3 of southern New England.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH 6 PM SUNDAY/
Key Messages:

* Cold front brings passing showers early tonight, but with cooler conditions and gusty NW winds up to 45 mph for overnight.

Details:

A cold front then arrives for early evening. Once this front passes by, the arrival of drier air should bring and end to any showers. Anticipating all of our region to be dry by around midnight, with many areas dry earlier than that.

The presence of the cold front will maintain gusty conditions, even as winds become west to northwest. Still expecting wind gusts of 25-40 mph, with the highest gusts over the higher terrain. Outside chance that NW gusts across the higher terrain could get to around 45-50 mph. No current plans for Wind Advisories at this time, but will continue to monitor.

High pressure starts to arrive for Sunday. Thus, winds will start to diminish through the day. Dry conditions expected with near normal high temperatures.

LONG TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/
Key Messages: * Dry for much of Monday with light winds.
* Showers Monday night into Tuesday and another round Friday.
* Temperatures next week slightly above normal.

Monday through Tuesday:

A brief upper level ridge shifts over southern New England for Monday yielding light NW winds. Winds likely switch to onshore (SE) flow along the coastline in the afternoon at 6-12 mph.
Temperatures trend slightly cooler than Sunday with highs in the 50s closer to the coastline and low 60s across interior southern New England. It will be dry much of the day with showers likely not arriving until Friday night. Although there is a low chance (< 20%) for an isolated shower in the early evening timeframe.

A round of showers move through Monday night into Tuesday with light rainfall amounts expected. Tuesday likely stays unsettled for the morning, as any remaining showers exit off to the east, followed by gradually drying conditions behind it in the afternoon. Weak warm advection will bring 850mb temperatures in the 6-10C range Tuesday. This will support above normal temperatures in the 60s and lower 70s with the exception of the Cape/Islands in the 50s.

Tuesday Night through Friday:

A cold front moves through Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. This will bring a slightly cooler airmass in for Wednesday, but still slightly above normal with highs in the 60s in most places. Similar pattern stays in place through the end of the week with zonal flow and 850mb temperature anomalies signaling slightly above normal temperatures. Ensemble guidance shows a signal for a more unsettled pattern Friday into the weekend with potential for periodic chances for precipitation.

AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/
Low - less than 30 percent.
Moderate - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

This Evening and Tonight: High confidence.

Mainly VFR. Brief borderline MVFR ceilings may accompany cold front with isolated to widely scattered SHRA in the 22z-03z timeframe. Front moves through after midnight with rapid clearing behind it and switch to NW winds with gusts 25-40 kt.
The higher end of that range possible for higher terrain terminals briefly(ORH).

MARINE
Forecaster Confidence Levels:

Low - less than 30 percent.
Medium - 30 to 60 percent.
High - greater than 60 percent.

Small Craft Advisories for all waters at some point today into tonight. Rough seas accompany the gusty winds across the ocean- exposed coastal waters. May need to extend advisories for some waters due to marginal wind gusts up to 25 kt, but do not yet have enough confidence to do so at this time. A cold front approaches the waters towards midnight, then moves farther offshore Sunday. Good visibility expected.

Sunday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Seas locally approaching 5 ft.

Monday: Winds less than 25 kt.

Monday Night: Winds less than 25 kt. Chance of rain.
