SYNOPSIS
High pressure returns with dry conditions today. Dry and mild conditions continue Tuesday, but a cold front arrives mid week.
After a few showers late Tuesday into early Wednesday morning. A more prolonged period with a chance for showers late this week as a low pressure passes nearby. A cold front arrives mid week which will return temperatures to more seasonable conditions Thursday, then trend warmer Friday & Saturday.
NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/
Key Messages...
* Warmer and less windy. Dry weather.
A ridge of high pressure overhead will keep winds light and return temperatures to many degrees warmer than average for late April, in in the low to mid 70s. The only exception will be Cape Cod and the islands where the ocean temperatures in the 40s will keep air temps in the 60s. High pressure centered to our south remains the dominant feature overnight but clear skies will becoming increasingly mixed with clouds as high level moisture moves in ahead of an approaching warm front.
SHORT TERM /TUESDAY/
Key messages...
* Dry and warmer with more clouds.
* Some scattered showers approach western MA by sunset.
Tuesday will be warmer as placement between the high pressure to our south and an encroaching trough of low pressure over the Great Lakes directs warm, southerly flow into SNE. This also tightens the pressure gradient generating a 30-40 kt LLJ overhead during the day.
Model soundings indicate an inversion around 900 mb, so expecting SW wind gusts of up to 30-35 mph. Some scattered showers out ahead of the cold front may hold together into far western SNE toward sunset but more likely that it is overnight, falling apart as it moves east.
LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/
Key Messages:
* Few showers are possible Tuesday night into Wednesday morning ahead of an approaching cold front. Otherwise dry Wednesday and Thursday.
* Near seasonable temperatures Thursday and Sunday, but more mild on Friday and Saturday. Rain chances return for early Friday and possibly again Saturday.
Tuesday Night to Thursday: While a few showers Tuesday night into Wednesday morning are possible, the best forcing with the cold front comes too late as the best moisture exits east of New England before the cold front arrives. The timing of the cold front will dictate the high temperatures for Wednesday, think it could be a slower and allow the coast plain to warm up nicely into the low and middle 70s, while those interior locations reach the middle 60s to low 70s. Cold front moves across the region and brings colder air across southern New England, widespread upper 30s to low 40s. Dry, cooler, but will be seasonable Thursday with highs in the lower to middle 60s.
Friday through Sunday: Unsettled conditions early Friday as a weak low pressure system passes to our northwest, think much of the steady rain falls predawn Friday and ends west to east mid to late morning. Friday is mild in the low to middle 70s. Another weak low pressure system moves through early Saturday but as this is almost a week out there is still lot of time for changes to change.
Temperatures on Saturday are in the upper 60s to low 70s. Sunday, a mid-level low could be in the vicinity of southern New England and may result in similar conditions to what we experienced this Sunday... cooler in the middle 60s with spot showers and breezy winds.
