Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Gray ME 1006 AM EST Mon Jan 20 2020

SYNOPSIS. Cold high pressure will then gradually build in for the first part of the week. Warmer weather looks likely mid to late week. Low pressure will pass south of New England this weekend.

NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/. 10 AM Update . Sunny skies expected for the remainder of the day for the vast majority of the forecast area. However, temperatures will remain cold with the wind making it feel even colder.

6am update.. increased PoP from Augusta through the midcoast to reflect the light snow seen on radar and obs. prev..Expect a cool and dry day today. Strong high pressure to our west will build eastwards into the region today as yesterdays storm move out of the Maritimes. As we remain between the two systems expect a steady northerly wind across the area, but the pressure gradient is weak enough to keep the prevailing winds around 10mph with just a few gusts to 20-25 possible. Temperatures will top out in the low 20s south to teens north. Good consensus for these temperatures so have not deviated from that.

SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/. Tonight the high pressure will continue to build into the area with winds becoming calm by evening. Additionally water vapor imagery shows a very dry air mass to our west which will move in place keeping skies clear. With this classic radiational cooling setup have used the statistical MOS guidance and even trended a bit colder in the mountain valleys with the result being temps in the teens below zero in the north. Only concern would be for a few high clouds to move in to the mountains, which could limit cooling slightly and thus have stayed in the teens below zero. If clear skies can hold out until dawn a few 20 below temps are possible.

Tuesday the high crests overhead with temperatures similar to today as clear skies and light winds continue. After this a warming trend begins for the latter portion of the week.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/. A large ridge of high pressure will remain over the New England Tuesday night. There may be some cloudiness during the night due to warm air advection from the west, albeit moisture will be limited.

Very quiet conditions Wednesday and Thursday with rising heights along the East Coast. Winds both at the surface and aloft will switch to the southwest allowing warmer temperatures to enter the region. By Thursday, expect widespread 30s across Maine and New Hampshire with perhaps some lower 40s in southernmost areas.

Deterministic model solutions as well as model ensembles continue to show a significant amount of differences from model to model solution as well as run to run consistency. The European model continues to indicate the track of the upper low south of New England this weekend before eventually bringing precipitation to the region Sunday night and early next week. Meanwhile, other solutions suggest a closer approach with the system with precipitation over the weekend. Wet bulbing effects suggest the possibility for a chance of snow during this period.

AVIATION /15Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/. Short Term . Just a very few MVFR ceilings remaining in the mountains this morning with most of the area overcast in VFR. Expect the skies to clear completely later today as high pressure builds in from the west. It will be clear and cold tonight with VFR holding through tomorrow.

Long Term . Mainly VFR conditions through the period. However ceilings and visibilities lower over the weekend as low pressure passes by to our south.

MARINE. Short Term . Will keep the SCA in effect as a few gusts to 25kts continuing to be observed this hour as the northerly winds resulting from being sandwiched between the approaching high and departing low continue. Expect winds to decrease this afternoon and remain below SCA through most of the week as high pressure builds in.

Long Term . Winds and seas will remain below SCA thresholds through much of the period. However, gusty northeasterly winds and building waves may develop this weekend with low pressure cross near or over southern New England.

HYDROLOGY. Will continue to monitor the ice and water levels on the Kennebec River at Augusta. Web Cams indicate plenty of ice in the area. High tide will be around 12Z this morning which may allow for rapid rises once again embedded in the tide cycle. Have issued an FLS for this area through the next high tide to try to get the word out. Ice jams can move at any time but the tidal factor makes this are particular susceptible to sudden jumps.

Multiple rivers showing evidence of ice movement tonight. Swift river at Roxbury, and the Sugar river at Claremont also appear to have ice jams. Currently no impacts with these so will continue to monitor.

GYX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. ME . None. NH . None. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory until 4 PM EST this afternoon for ANZ150>152-154.
