Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Portland OR 325 AM PDT Thu Oct 1 2020

SYNOPSIS. High pressure over the region will maintain warm and dry conditions through Friday, with varying amounts of smoke aloft. A weak disturbance will move across the Pac NW this weekend, strengthening onshore flow and bringing cooler temperatures.

SHORT TERM. Today through Saturday . Models in good agreement in showing the upper level ridge over the Pacific Northwest weakening slightly over the next few days. A weak shortwave trough moving up from the southwest is expected to push into the ridge position Saturday, aiding the weakening of the upper ridge. Marine clouds that have been persistent along the coast have slowly pushed into the coastal gaps and up the lower Columbia early this morning. With the surface pressure gradients flattening out, expect only shallow marine air to reach into the Willamette Valley this morning limiting the areal extent of inland low clouds and fog this morning.

Models generally show a modest onshore flow redeveloping this afternoon and evening, and again Friday afternoon as the upper level ridge weakens slightly. The net effect is probably little day to day change in temperatures or inland extent of the morning marine clouds Friday.

The weak shortwave expected to push into the ridge on Saturday appears likely increase the afternoon onshore pressure gradients. This should lead to a little cooler afternoon temperatures for the inland valleys.

LONG TERM. Saturday night through Wednesday . A shortwave moving through in a westerly flow aloft is depicted by models on Sunday. While the shortwave weakens the ridge, upper heights are expected to remain on the high side. Moisture profiles suggest only relatively shallow moisture in the low levels. The net result in this case is morning marine clouds reaching into the inland valleys, while afternoon temperatures both Sunday and Monday cool back closer to seasonal normals. Expect to see dry weather continue Tuesday and Wednesday but with a little warmer temperatures again as the upper ridge re-strengthens some.

AVIATION. The main impacts for the 12Z TAF cycle will be marine stratus/fog. As of 10Z Thursday, shallow marine status along the coast has moved into the gaps of the Coast Range and down the Columbia River into Sauvie Island. In addition, areas of valley fog have formed early this morning. Expect marine stratus/fog to make it into KPDX and KEUG by 12Z with scattered to broken cigs between 300 and 500 ft. Stratus will then linger at these terminals until 16-17Z before clearing out. There is also a chance for stratus to affect KSLE and KUAO between 12-16Z, but confidence is not as high. Will mention scattered cigs around 500 ft for now. Marine stratus/fog should begin lifting along the coast around 18Z.

Otherwise, hazy skies will most likely continue today due to lingering upper level smoke. The latest guidance suggests the smoke will thin out a bit Thursday evening. Impacts to aviation are not expected at this time.

Refer to http://weather.gov/zse for detailed regional aviation weather and hazard information.

KPDX AND APPROACHES . Marine stratus is quickly approaching the KPDX terminal this morning, and should move in by 12Z with scattered to broken cigs around 500 ft. Fog is also possible as the stratus moves in. Cigs/fog should lift by 17Z and give way to hazy skies as some upper level smoke lingers over the area. -TK

MARINE..No significant changes to the marine forecast as high pressure continues aloft. Relatively light northerly winds will continue over the waters for the next few days as the pressure gradient remains rather weak. Winds will begin increase Sunday evening into Monday as thermally induced surface low pressure builds up the northern CA and southern OR coast. This may bring small craft winds to the central waters with gusts between 20-25 kt.

Otherwise, multiple lows in the Gulf of Alaska will continue to send periodic 6 to 8 ft westerly swell trains across the waters every 36-48 hours. Given the lighter winds and minimal wind wave development, this should only bring seas up toward 9 ft at times. -TK/JBonk
