KEY MESSAGES
- High confidence and concern for extreme cold conditions, first half of next week. Periods of light snow will accompany the cold air.
- Another period of accumulating snow and cold possible late next week.
DISCUSSION
Today through Sunday Afternoon...
Saturday/Saturday night will be a mostly dry thanks to westerly zonal flow, but look for increasing clouds late afternoon with isolated/scattered light snow showers in the mountains.
Temperatures will warm into the teens to lower 20s west to single digits and low teens east. Overnight lows will range from single digits above zero west to single digits below zero east.
A weak wave in the NW flow aloft will track over the area Sunday carving out a more well defined cyclonic mid level flow. An associated weak shot of cold air will drop into the east creating some brief baroclinicity and low level convergence across our central zones. This may produce some light snow or flurries, but nothing with impacts. Billings could see a dusting. The chance of even an inch of snow is just 20%, mainly across the Bull Mountains and Northeastern Yellowstone County. Temps Sunday will range from lower 20s west to single digits and lower teens east. BT
Sunday night through Friday...
Sunday night, an upper low and Arctic front will plunge into the Northern Rockies. This will bring very cold temperatures to the forecast area, Monday through at least next Thursday. The biggest concern will be Monday night and Tuesday morning, when overnight lows are forecast to be in the minus teens to minus 30F (coldest in the north and east). While strong winds are not in the forecast, wind chill values will fall to 30 to 45F below zero, with the coldest values in the east. High temperatures will be in the single digits to teens, Monday through Wednesday. There is a good chance for light snowfall Sunday night through Monday morning, best chance in the west- central zones. Total snow accumulations will be light, with a 15-60% chance of at least 1 inch from Hardin to Big Timber (best chance between Billings and Big Timber).
The general flow pattern over the region will be cyclonic, northwesterly flow until Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. Models are showing a weak upper wave disturbance dropping through the area. The only implications this will have are some light snowfall, a flow shift to westerlies which will result in slightly warmer temperatures, Wednesday through Friday (highs in the 10s to low 20s).
Ensembles are working out differences in a new system, late next week. An upper low in the Pacific Northwest is shown coming ashore in California and moving across the Great Basin. The placement and trajectory of this low will determine the extent to which we see any impacts. For now, continue to monitor the forecast and prepare for hazardously cold conditions to start the week.

18z Discussion...
VFR conditions are widespread across the region this morning and that is expected to continue through most of the day. Some BLSN is possible this afternoon as winds pick up west of KBIL and this this was included in the KLVM TAF. This evening (after 22z) some small chances for light snow showers move in for KBIL & KSHR as well as sites westward. PROB30 groups in the TAFs reflect these chances.
Mountains could be partially obscured at times to to BLSN.
