Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 856 AM PST Mon Mar 1 2021
UPDATE. The current forecast remains on track and changes are not planned today. A deep upper level trough off of the West Coast will close off this afternoon, splitting from the mean flow. A push of drier mid - upper level air will push across the region this afternoon which will allow for the mid-level overcast conditions to mix out and give way to some sun breaks. As a result, high temperatures will rise into the low to mid 50s, with the warmest temperatures generally along and east of the I-5 corridor. A weak shortwave trough will eject across the region this evening/tonight bringing the chance for a few light showers across portions of the region with POPs generally remaining in the 20-40% range.

PREV DISCUSSION. /issued 243 AM PST Mon Mar 1 2021/
SYNOPSIS . The start to meteorological spring is going to be fairly quiet for Western Washington. A series of weak disturbances will pass through the area but they are not expected to have any big impact on our weather. A stronger front will move through towards the end of the week which produce some more widespread rain.
SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/ . As was expected a weak front is moving through the area tonight. And radar is not picking up on any rain showers. So we are just expecting some cloudy skies for the start of the month.
It does not appear to be any major changes in the pattern for the next few days. A few weak disturbances will make their way through the area but we are not expecting much in the way of any precipitation with these. At best some light scattered rain showers.
The more exciting aspect of the short term forecast (for some of you at least) will be the temperatures. For much of the area we are expecting high temperatures to be in the 50s.
LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/ . Thursday will likely be the warmest day this week with highs in the upper 50s, and maybe low 60s for the lowland areas of Western Washington.
However, a cold front is expected to move through later Thursday. So expect more widespread rain toward the end of this week. That said, the intensity is still expected to be fairly light for most of the area. As per usual the Olympics and the coast will see the bulk of this rain.
Once this front moves through temperatures will fall back down to the low to mid 50s.
Welcome to spring.

AVIATION . Southwesterly flow aloft as weak high pressure shifts eastward. Light offshore low-level flow will turn onshore later today. Abundant higher level moisture continues to stream across western Washington. General VFR conditions will deteriorate to MVFR by early Tuesday morning as onshore flow behind a dissipating front spreads lower clouds into the region.
KSEA . VFR conditions expected through this evening with MVFR conditions possible after 09Z tonight. Surface winds light southerly.
27
MARINE . A weak front is advancing toward the coastal waters this morning and will push east today. May continue to see some winds near advisory strength just ahead of the front, so will leave the current advisory for the coastal waters in effect though it appears more marginal for the southern zones (south of Point Grenville). Seas will also rebuild to around 10 ft with this system, so the advisory has been extended into the evening. Onshore flow increases behind the front, with a short period of winds to 25 kt likely in the Strait of Juan de Fuca likely late this afternoon through early tonight - a small craft advisory has been issued.
The next front lifts north through the waters around Wednesday and advisory strength winds may return over the coastal waters. Winds increase more significantly Thursday, with stronger south winds developing ahead of a stronger cold front. There remains some potential for gales with this front late in the week. Meanwhile, the combination of a larger west swell and a southerly mix of wind wave & fresh swell could lead to combined seas building into the 15-18 ft range Thursday night through Friday.
Cullen
HYDROLOGY . Light rainfall amounts over the next week will preclude the threat for river flooding. Continuing to keep an eye on Friday through the weekend as southwest flow builds over the region, snow levels rise, and wet weather returns.
