UPDATE
No significant changes to the forecast. Please see the aviation section below for updates to that forecast.

PREV DISCUSSION
/issued 432 PM PST Thu Dec 7 2023/

SYNOPSIS
Light to moderate rain and mountain snow will continue through Friday morning. The next potent system will move through the region Saturday and Sunday bringing moderate to heavy rain, mountain snow, and areas of gusty winds. A quieter period of weather appears to be in store next week.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/
Light to moderate showers continue to move across western WA this afternoon. Snow levels have begun to fall and are now below 3000' with snow accumulating at Snoqualmie Pass. Expect continued cooling with showers through Friday morning before precipitation tapers off. The Winter Weather Advisory for the Cascades remains in effect.

Focus then turns to the weekend system. QPF forecasts have increased significantly in the last 24 hours and the peak snow levels have also risen from around 4500 feet on Sunday to closer to 5500 or even 6000 feet. This had lead to an increased concern for isolated flooding this weekend (though nothing compared to earlier this week). See they Hydrology section for more details.
Other details regarding the weekend system are pretty consistent with previous forecasts. Gusty winds are expected to develop Saturday morning, peak during the mid-day hours, then decrease in the evening. The strongest winds (likely around 45 mph) will be along the Pacific Coast and areas from Port Townsend/Whidbey Island northward. In addition, moderate to heavy snow will fall across the Cascade passes Saturday through early Sunday morning before the snow levels rise above pass level.

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/
Relatively quiet weather conditions are expected through at least the first half of the week as a ridge of high pressure builds over the area. By Wednesday the ridge axis slides east and opens the door for waves to move through the region, however at this time nothing of major impact is expected through late week. The next signal for significant weather in the extended holds off until the weekend.
-Wolcott-

AVIATION
The flow aloft is W to NW with low level onshore flow - southerly for much of the interior. Ceilings are mainly MVFR to low-end VFR with scattered showers. The air mass will become more dry and stable on Friday with high pressure moving in.

KSEA...Ceilings are within MVFR to low- end VFR overnight lifting to fully VFR late in the morning Friday. Light southerly winds 4-6 kts.

MARINE
Onshore flow prevails tonight with highest wind and waves through the Strait of Juan de Fuca - a Small Craft Advisory remains in effect. Meanwhile, westerly swells are subsiding and will continue to subside under 10 ft tonight. The flow will turn southerly then increase Friday night into Saturday as a strong Pacific frontal system forms over the NE Pacific. This system may bring gales to the Coastal Waters, eastern Strait, Admiralty Inlet Area and Northern Inland Waters. Winds will ease on Sunday but seas will be high with 10-16 ft swells at the Coastal Waters. The flow weakens and turns offshore early next week with high pressure. 33

HYDROLOGY
A frontal system will bring another round of widespread lowland rain and mountain snow with snow levels rising to between 6000 and 6500 feet. Though considerably weaker than the last event earlier this week, forecast rainfall totals have increased today and are from 2-3 inches in the Cascades and 3-4 inches in the Olympics. Snow levels are also forecast higher.
Combined with recent heavy rains that has rivers running high and soils already saturated with little time to dry out, this will lead to significant rises on streams and rivers. There is also a low chance of exceeding flood stage on river in the outlook areas of Mason, King, Thurston, Grays Harbor, and Lewis Counties.
