Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 320 PM PDT Thu Jun 4 2020

SYNOPSIS. A few light showers were over and near the Olympics this afternoon. An upper trough will move over the area for another round of cool showery weather through the weekend. Monday could be a break between weather systems before a front arrives Tuesday.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/. Not much remains of the weak front--just a few light showers around the Olympics this afternoon. An upper trough will increase the clouds and showers late Friday. Saturday and Sunday will be cool and showery with highs only in the upper 50s and lower 60s. In the low levels onshore flow will be light at first, but as the trough moves inland pressure gradients will increase Sunday. Snowfall in the mountains will just be a few inches on the high peaks, orographics are poor and the trough will be digging to the south. There will also be a chance of typical springtime isolated afternoon thunderstorms of the sort we see with cool upper troughs. 19

LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/. After a relative break in shower activity on Monday, a frontal system should arrive for a rainy day on Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday will probably see postfrontal showers as an upper trough nears the area for the latter part of the week. Overall it looks like June will continue to see an unsettled weather pattern and the CPC outlooks continue to lean toward cooler and wetter than average--although to be sure, this has not been that unusual and June is famous for cool damp weather in Western Washington. 19

AVIATION. Westerly flow will persist aloft tonight, before becoming more southwesterly overnight. Meanwhile, onshore flow will continue in the low levels. Satellite imagery indicates that mid level clouds have started to scatter this afternoon, while a few showers continue to bring some light precipitation to portions of the Olympic Peninsula. Precipitation should decrease by this evening and overall conditions for the terminals should remain VFR. Winds will remain light, however will transition to a more northerly direction during the evening hours. The next system will approach the region on Friday, bringing another round of lower ceilings and rain to the majority of the region by Friday afternoon. SB

KSEA . VFR cigs with some scattered mid level clouds. Variable and light winds will transition more northerly again by this evening, 3- 8 knots. SB

MARINE. Winds will remain relatively light across area waters through the remainder of the day. The next system will move through the region Friday afternoon into Friday night, bringing another round of Small Craft Advisory winds, mainly along the Strait of Juan de Fuca and portions of the adjacent inland waters. Onshore flow will persist into early next week with additional systems expected to move through the Pacific Northwest. Additional headlines will be needed at times as these systems traverse the region. A westerly swell 4-6 feet will briefly build to 5 to 7 feet tonight before subsiding again by mid-morning Friday. SB

HYDROLOGY. The daily hydrology discussion has ended until the start of the next rainy season; it will only be updated as needed until then.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

There are five sources. 1) Documents and manuals from a variety of sources. These have not been checked for accuracy and in many cases have not even been read by anyone associated with L-36.com. I have no idea of they are useful or accurate, I leave that to the reader. 2) Articles others have written and submitted. It is not checked for accuracy either by anyone at L-36.com or by the source which is typically the US Government. See the NOAA web site for their disclaimer. Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
