Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 256 PM PST Mon Dec 9 2019

SYNOPSIS. Low clouds remained over most of the lowlands this afternoon and will persist into the evening hours. A weak front will move through Western Washington Tuesday afternoon and evening. Stronger weather systems will give Western Washington wet and breezy weather Wednesday night through Friday.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY/. The mountains, most of the San Juans, and a good portion of the Washington coast had a sunny afternoon today. Most of the lowlands and Puget Sound basin remained under a low overcast. It is hard to imagine much change in the low clouds overnight and there will be some spots with fog. A weakening front will move into the area Tuesday afternoon and evening with areas of light rain turning to showers and ending Wednesday morning. A stronger frontal system will reach the area later in the day on Wednesday through Thursday with periods of rain and breezy weather at times.

LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/. The wet weather should continue into Friday and then Western Washington will probably be on the cool showery side of the westerlies. Some ridging is possible for Sunday and Monday, but the details are all over the map and the ridge might not be strong enough to keep weather systems from reaching the area by Monday.

AVIATION. An upper level ridge will move inland tonight ahead of a weak system approaching the region on Tuesday. Light flow will persist in the lower levels through Tuesday morning. The airmass remains moist in the low levels and stable.

Conditions across the region remain a mixed bag this afternoon, with satellite still showing low status and fog across much of the Sound and Southwest Interior, while the coast and mountains remain clear. High level clouds will increase this evening ahead of the next system approaching the region on Tuesday, but not in time to prevent another round of fog from redeveloping tonight. Northerly surface winds will become more southerly during the overnight hours.

KSEA . Current ceilings remain below 1000 feet with visibility gradually increasing to 6SM. Areas of fog could reform this evening, dropping ceilings and visibilities back down to IFR, even LIFR, at times. Light northeasterly winds will persist tonight, shifting more southerly around 09Z Tuesday. 14

MARINE. Weak high pressure will remain over the area tonight. A weakening front will then move through the area on Tuesday, bringing small craft advisory strength easterlies to the western Strait of Juan de Fuca and small craft strength southeasterlies to the Coastal Waters.

A stronger frontal system will then move through the region on Wednesday and Thursday, brining possible gales to the coastal waters. Thus, have issued a gale watch for the coastal waters on Wednesday. In addition, west swell will build to around 15-17 feet Wednesday night into Thursday. 14

HYDROLOGY. River flooding is unlikely for the next 7 days.

NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
