KEY MESSAGES:
- Widespread precipitation this morning across Lemhi County and southwest Montana, with snow accumulations above 5,500 feet
- Another round of showers on Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning, mostly in the form of rain
- Warm and dry later in the week
Water vapor satellite imagery early this morning indicates a well-formed low pressure circulation over the Great Basin. A deformation zone oriented northeast to southwest is situated north of the low pressure center over southwest Montana and Lemhi County. This feature will keep valley rain and mountain snow (above about 5500 feet) falling over southwest and west-central Montana and Lemhi County through this morning. A Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect for Lemhi County above 6000 feet through 9am MDT. Through Monday, precipitation totals across the valleys will range from 0.25" to 0.80", and 0.50" to 1.25" in the higher terrain, with the higher amounts focused in Lemhi County.
Remote locations above 6,500 feet in Lemhi County will see the highest snow amounts with 6-12 inches.
The Great Basin trough will move east by this afternoon. After a short break in wet weather, a broad trough of low pressure will amplify over western Montana on Tuesday afternoon. This feature will bring more showers to the Northern Rockies into Wednesday morning. A cold front will accompany this system, resulting in increased westerly winds with the frontal passage on Tuesday evening, primarily along the Continental Divide and Lemhi County.
Snow levels will stay high enough to keep precipitation in the form of rain on all but the highest peaks of the Mission, Swan, and Flathead ranges, as well as the Continental Divide in Glacier Park.
A warming trend is anticipated Thursday into Friday, with ensemble model support showing greater than 90% confidence for the development of a broad ridge of high pressure, leading to drier and warmer conditions. Furthermore, the warmest temperatures of the Spring thus far are in the forecast for Friday, with highs reaching into the upper 70s and 80s across valleys.
AVIATION
Low pressure over the Great Basin is sending moisture into Lemhi County and southwest Montana this morning. Expect rain to persist through about 28/1300Z at KSMN and KBTM. Gusty north winds will continue at KGPI through about 28/1200Z this morning.
Although precipitation will decrease today, expect midlevel clouds to persist. Upper level cloud cover will take over tonight ahead of another round of unsettled weather on Tuesday.
