Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 535 AM AKDT Fri May 10 2024

SHORT TERM
/ Through Friday night / Tail end of weather front exits the southern panhandle early Friday. Scattered showers behind the front. A small ridge at the surface and loft will be transitioning east late Friday and Saturday. Should be limiting the precipitation and the weakening of the gradient will weaken the winds through Southeast Alaska by Friday night.

Any expected precipitation should be rain, though it is cold enough that a mix or all snow may fall near White Pass early Friday. May also pick up a some mixed along the Northeast Gulf Coast late Friday night, as some precipitation from the next front starts to spread in from the next system.

The next weather system is just moving into the western gulf Friday morning and the associated front will move into the central gulf by Saturday morning.

LONG TERM
The long term starts with the return of the wet weather for SE AK. Rain chances will increase from west to east as our next system moves across the gulf during the day on Saturday and into Saturday evening. With this, weather across the area will continue to feel more like late summer and early fall rather than late spring with the continued wet weather. As of right now, the weather looks to remain wet and unsettled but rainfall amounts each day should become less compared to the rain amounts being seen today. With the continued clouds and rain, temperatures continue to remain cool and should continue on a trend similar to where they have been. As we head farther into the long term, CPC guidance continues to show in the 6 to 10 day a more cool and wet pattern for SE AK. This is backed up by the 8 to 14 day guidance that suggests a continued cool and dry pattern with the exception of the southern panhandle. Probabilities of precipitation remain near equal for locations south of Frederick sound.

AVIATION
Front finally exits the panhandle Friday with strong winds and moderate rain giving way to more benign conditions overall through the morning hours. Southwesterly flow in the low levels will ensure continued isolated shower potential with some breaks in cloud cover, especially for the southern panhandle later in the day Friday. No significant LLWS or strong surface winds are expected for this TAF period, with lone exception being Skagway which will see southerly winds of 20 kt or more into Friday afternoon.

MARINE
Small Craft Advisory for winds/seas this morning and staring again late tonight near Cape Suckling. Winds across inner channels primarily 20 kt or less Friday morning with a few local exceptions, and diminishing to under 15 kt over night.

AJK WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
PUBLIC...Strong Wind until 1 PM AKDT this afternoon for AKZ318.
MARINE...Small Craft Advisory for PKZ012-641>644-651-652-661>664-671-672.
