Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 223 PM AKDT Sat Jun 12 2021

SHORT TERM. /Tonight through Monday night/ The short term forecast will be quiet for most of it. The main takeaways are - overall rain chances are slim (until the end of the short term) with temps on the warm side of normal.

Normal highs this time of year are in the upper 50s to low 60s. The going forecast is calling for Sunday’s highs to be in the upper 50s to low 60s for the northern half of the panhandle while 60s to near 70 are expected for the southern half. Monday’s expected highs are in the 60s to near 70 for majority of southeast AK.

Forecaster confidence for highs above 60 is above average to high. Areas south of Frederick Sound have a greater than 70 percent chance of getting above 60 tomorrow. And most of the panhandle has a greater than 60 percent chance of getting above 60 on Monday. So the takeaway is, SE AK has a pretty good chance of seeing above average temps in the short term.

Rain chances and clouds will decrease tonight and tomorrow morning, leaving tomorrow afternoon with overall low chances for rain with mostly sunny to partly cloudy skies.

A weak area of low pressure will move northward Sunday night into Monday, which will bring the next chance for rain. Rain chances will increase in the south Sunday night and the rain will move northward on Monday. So by Monday night, most of SE AK will be under at least a 20 to 30 percent chance of rain. PoPs are greatest north of Icy Strait Monday night at greater than 60 percent.

Due to lack of organization in the pressure fields, the wind isn’t looking very strong with most of the short term forecast calling for winds 15 kts or less. One area of concern is Lynn Canal Monday afternoon, where winds may get up to 20 kts.

LONG TERM. /Monday through Saturday as of 10PM Friday/ . Weak easterly wave activity propagating from Canada looks continue over southeast Alaska, giving us periodic chances for disorganized convective shower activity through the period. An inverted trough of low pressure still looks to move over the Panhandle for the Monday timeframe, bringing an organized area of precipitation to the area from south to north. The winds will be northerly as the trough approaches and shift to a more southerly direction after the it passes through the Panhandle. A stronger area of low pressure will move from the central Gulf and pass to the south of the Panhandle and weaken toward the weekend. After that, general ridging pattern moves into the eastern Gulf and Panhandle area. What we've been seeing in the forecast is a more typical summertime weather pattern for southeast Alaska than what we've seen for the past couple of Summers.

The warmest days will be Monday, Thursday, and Friday with daytime high temperatures into the 60s throughout the majority of the Panhandle for each of those days. This is indicated by model 850mb temperatures over the area and the latest MOS guidance. The possibility for decreased daytime cloudiness is present on those days over the Panhandle, as well, which will help temperatures climb.

Hydrologic concerns should be at a minimum through the period throughout the Panhandle, due to the precipitation from the convective showery easterly wave activity and the inverted trough being relatively short-lived, giving relatively low storm-total QPF values.

As for the winds, they will generally stay on the lighter side at around 15 knots or less throughout the Panhandle, eastern Gulf, and inner channel waters through the long term forecast period, generally giving good conditions for mariners.
