Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 634 AM AKDT Sun Apr 18 2021

SHORT TERM. Record weekend warmth continues across Southeast Alaska as both the capital city and Yakutat scorched the old high temperature records for April 17th by ten degrees. Juneau's 70 degrees yesterday became the earliest in the season it has ever reached 70 or warmer, beating the old record by a week on the calendar. Signs that the best heating is behind us weakened overnight. Downslope winds broke inversions last night in both Skagway and Downtown Juneau, raising temperatures 15 to 20 degrees in the middle of the night. Winds at 925 mb also appear to climax this morning with a slow easing through the day. But greater mixing during the day usually has a way of extending synoptic wind influences longer than purely gradient winds. Thus, we fully expect more downsloping to continue well into the day. Potentially we could see downsloping winds in Ketchikan, too, where temperatures in the First City may actually match our optimistic highs of the mid 60s. ECMWF and NAEFS still forecast temperatures of up to 5 standard deviations above normal, and checks of Yakutat and Annette 12Z raobs reveal record warm temperatures aloft yet again. Therefore, record falls are likely on this Sunday as well. Sunday highs are expected between 60 and 70 degrees with the only two exceptions: Petersburg and Kake. Related to downslope winds that raised temperatures overnight in Skagway and parts of Juneau, small craft northerlies still blow through Lynn Canal and out of Taku Inlet. These winds do ease through the day as gradients begin to weaken due to a front exiting the central gulf well to the west.

Weak surface ridging from the south noses into the eastern gulf Monday and strengthens Monday night. Thus there is increasing confidence in a marine layer developing and impacting the coast with clouds and cooler temperatures. The Inner Channels will see modest falls in temperature as well, but we did raise highs on Monday here, as temperature falls will be less noticeable than we originally thought. Given this pattern, chances of rain probably look more drizzly under a shallow, stable cloud regime as identified earlier. The best chances will be across the northeast Gulf Coast.

The biggest challenge of the night was following dynamic changes in wind and temperature. Hourly temperature changes continue to destroy our confidence. But fortunately, our confidence in maxima and minina are greater.

LONG TERM. /Tuesday through Sunday/ . Next week looks to play out with overall quiet weather over the panhandle. A weak front at the start of the week will bring clouds and spotty light rain or sprinkles from the southwest on Tuesday. Then a front will move through western Canada but pass to the east of the Panhandle Tuesday night. The bulk of any moisture should stay in Canada but the panhandle will see clouds stick around until another high pressure builds in the Yukon behind the front late Wednesday. Then clouds should move south and the panhandle will have clear to mostly clear skies until Friday. Friday and into the weekend is looking like the next chance for the a low to move into the gulf that would bring the area more rain.

Temps this week should remain at or just above the climate averages for the third week of April. Average highs are in the upper 40s to lower 50s and average lows are in the 30s. The forecast for this upcoming week is calling for highs mostly in the 50s and lows in the 30s to near 40.

AJK WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. PUBLIC . Strong Wind until noon AKDT today for AKZ025. MARINE . Small Craft Advisory for PKZ012.
