Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 258 PM AKDT Thu Apr 2 2020

SHORT TERM. /Thursday evening through Saturday/ The calendar may say April, but unfortunately old man winter is quarantined here in Southeast Alaska due to recent events. Everyone across the region has been feeling his effects as social distancing is not something he practices. From near record morning lows to snow moving in by Friday, old man winter is letting everyone know he is here to stay. A high pressure over NW Canada has kept the flow northerly all week allowing SE Alaska to remain dry with large swings in diurnal temperatures. Thursday has been no different as temperatures have rebounded from the teens and 20s this morning to the low to mid 40s by mid afternoon.

The streak of dry weather this week is expected to end Friday as an area of low pressure pushes into the northern gulf and heads southeastward. Aloft, the axis of a 500mb ridge over the gulf will shift eastward over the Panhandle tonight into tomorrow as a quick moving trough digs southeast. Precip will overspread the region from NW to SE beginning late tonight around Yakutat. Much of the Panhandle will get in on the precip action through the day on Friday, with the outer coast expected to receive "heaviest" amounts. The upper lynn canal area will be the driest portion of the Panhandle as mid level flow from the west usually rain shadows this area. With dry air currently at the surface, current thinking is that once precipitation begins, it will quickly cool the column down enough to change any rain over to snow. Areas along the outer coast from Sitka to POW Island may mix with rain in the afternoon as 1000-850mb thickness values will straddle the 1290m line and the "warmer" marine air may allow the boundary layer to warm up just enough. No major accumulations expected anywhere across the Panhandle tomorrow. The sun angle in April is high enough to where it is hard to get accumulating snow if the rates remain light. Yakutat is expected receive the most snow as the bulk of their precipitation will fall before sunrise with 1 to 2 inches likely. Light amounts expected elsewhere.

The precipitation quickly pushes SE and out of the area by Saturday morning making way for another dry day across the Panhandle. NW flow aloft will keep any precip out of the region, however clouds will still be able to stream in up and over the ridge building in from the west. Temps at 850 mb will still be quite cold for this time of year, around -6 to -8C, which will translate to surface temps at or just below average. Most areas should hit the 40 degree mark during the afternoon hours with the Southern Panhandle a few degrees warmer than the north. Overall, not a bad day setting up for Saturday.

No major changes made to the short term forecast today.

LONG TERM. /Saturday to Thursday as of 10 pm Wednesday/ . This weekend the upper level flow becomes more zonal allowing quick moving troughs across the gulf towards the panhandle. The later time frame solutions differ slightly on the timing of the next larger features, but they all are moving a short wave into the northern panhandle Monday.

In regards to surface features from the weekend onward, a low will continue to track southeastwards from just west of Haida Gwaii into the British Columbia coastal waters, taking with it any of the lingering showers occurring over the southern panhandle area. A broad ridge reforms over the gulf to the Northeast Gulf Coast during the weekend, am not anticipating much in way of clearing with this ridge due to the orientation and broader/flatter appearance. A weak trough being supported aloft, moves into the panhandle late Sunday to Monday, might just have the perfect timing to deliver a spring time snowfall of a couple of inches to the Juneau area and northern panhandle. Have this feature tagged as something to watch its development.

The collection of models are showing a strong low moving northeast over the western Bering Sea to the Bering Strait on Sunday, with some energy separating and headed east over the western Alaska Range to the northern gulf. A weak low forms over the far northern gulf and holds in place through the early part of next week. This feature is expected to spread precipitation across the panhandle for early part of the week.

The new long range models solutions are hinting at a low developing in the North Pacific that heads towards the NE gulf pocket for midweek. We will keep an eye on the situation with the wind and rainfall potential.

AJK Watches/Warnings/Advisories. PUBLIC . None. MARINE . None.
