Southeast Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Juneau AK 609 AM AKDT Wed Sep 30 2020

SHORT TERM. /Through Thu night/ Fairly dynamic short range forecast today. First off, the warm front that went through last night has ushered in stronger E flow and warmer air aloft this morning. NE winds of 25 to 30 kt are blowing down southern Lynn Canal and Cross South this morning and some outflow areas farther south are showing some gusty winds this morning. The strong E flow has also cleared out skies and suppressed most fog formation this morning (only really wind sheltered areas like Angoon and Petersburg have seen any fog). In addition, the Annette RAOB sounding this morning showed a very warm air mass just above the surface (20C at 400 feet with similar temps up to 4000 feet). Some areas with wind have already seen some of that warmer air mix down to the surface. One notable example is Sitka Airport which is currently at 67 degrees as of 5 am (which is already a record high for the day) due to the warm air aloft mixing down and downslope warming. Expect to see more areas with warm temperatures today as the overnight inversions break, the warmer air aloft gets mixed closer to the surface, and downslope warming occurs in some areas. Wide spread upper 50s and 60s will be the norm. A chance at 70 for some areas of the south and outer coast is also possible today.

Things will be changing this afternoon and evening as a fast moving cold front passes through the panhandle from the SW. Rain should be starting up some time in the late afternoon for most areas of the panhandle, and the steadier frontal precip will not last that long before switching to convective precip Wed night. Rainfall amounts will not be that significant as a result (around a quarter inch to half an inch at the highest). Winds will be on the breezy side (10 to 25 mph) with many areas switching from a E or NE wind to a SE wind as the front approaches. Downtown Juneau and Douglas may see a synoptically driven mountain wave event this morning as easterly cross barrier flow kicks up this morning as well. Winds are not currently doing much downtown right now but there is the potential for gusts to 40 mph later this morning as the inversion below mountain top breaks and cross barrier flow increases. These winds will diminish this afternoon as the easterly flow dies due to the approaching front.

Post-front, showers decrease rapidly and winds calm down Thu as a ridge builds over the panhandle. However, by Thu night winds will be picking up again in the gulf as our next front approaches from the west.

Forecast changes mainly focused on local effects for winds, and temperatures. Little in the way of large scale changes made as guidance remains in fairly decent agreement about upcoming systems. Favored the Nam and Gfs for any updates today.

LONG TERM. /Friday through Tuesday/ As of 10pm Tuesday. Fairly active pattern, but models remain in good agreement on the timing of fronts so only minor adjustments were made to the extended forecast. The period begins with a gale force front over the outside waters and rain arriving along the outer coast early Friday morning. The rain spreads inland across the panhandle with a short period of moderate to heavy rates. Southerly jet stream winds along and ahead of the front brings with it another round of very warm air with freezing levels upwards of 8-12kft. Similar to the current frontal system, cold air will push in from the west behind the front late Friday night through Saturday. The CAA will cause a change over to showers Friday night, then a decreasing trend through Saturday afternoon. As with all cold fronts in the fall time, will need to watch for possible thunderstorm development over the gulf.

Another low moves into the western gulf from the SW Saturday night. The assoc front will likely cause another round of gale force winds over the outside waters and heavy rain looks likely for Sunday. Warm air is again drawn up by this system, but not to the extreme of the previous two. More pronounced will be the cooling trend behind it and into the start of next week. The coldest air looks to stay over the western gulf/Aleutians, but could see brisk mornings if timing of breaks in the clouds line up with overnight hours.

AJK Watches/Warnings/Advisories. PUBLIC . Strong Wind until 1 PM AKDT this afternoon for AKZ025. MARINE . Gale Warning for PKZ041-043-051-052. Small Craft Advisory for PKZ012-013-021-022-036-042-053.
