Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 337 PM AKDT Tue Mar 31 2020

SYNOPSIS. A weather system will move north along the west coast of Alaska on Wednesday and will push east into the western Interior Wednesday night bringing snowfall.

DISCUSSION. Looking at surface observations, the models initialized the strong area of high pressure over the Yukon Territory a few millibars too low. The models are in decent agreement with the overall synoptic scale pattern out through early Thursday. There is still some model disagreement between the models when it comes to the potential for precipitation pushing into the Interior on Interior on Friday. The NAM really wants to keep the precipitation along the front all the way to the Canadian Border as the front pushes east across the Interior. The GFS keeps the area east of Tanana free of precipitation with this feature. The ECMWF is more of a middle of the road solution with lower QPF amounts across the central and eastern Interior than the NAM.

Aloft, at 500 mb, A 548 dam ridge currently stretches from Kaktovik to Dillingham. This ridge will slowly push to the east tonight and Wednesday and by early Thursday will be east of the Canadian Border. A shortwave currently over the Bering Strait will push north into the Chukchi Sea tonight. A shortwave will push east across the Bering Sea tonight and Wednesday, reaching the Yukon Delta Wednesday afternoon. This shortwave will push into the Interior Wednesday night and Thursday. A trough moving east across the Bering Sea will reach the west coast of Alaska Thursday evening, and will push east across the Interior Thursday night and Friday.

Central and Eastern Interior: We will see the cloud cover thicken up a a little bit overnight; however, no precipitation is anticipated until at Thursday. A front moving through the Interior has the potential to bring a quick shot of snowfall on Thursday. The NAM is more enthusiastic with this feature than the GFS, with the ECMWF somewhere in the middle. The GFS keeps the snowfall confined to areas from Tanana east while the NAM bring the snow all the way to the Canadian border. We increased the PoPs for the eastern Interior; however, at the moment we kept chance PoPs for areas from Fairbanks east. The front moves through quickly at any rate. Potential snowfall totals with this system currently look to be around one to two inches.

North Slope and Brooks Range: Strong, southerly gap winds will continue through passes in the eastern Brooks Range this evening. Wind gusts of around 35 mph will result in blowing snow near Atigun and Anaktuvuk Passes. The ongoing Winter Weather Advisory will be extended for a few hours to go with the latest trends. Gusty southeasterly winds will bring blowing snow to the Chukchi Sea coast this evening. No precipitation is expected through tomorrow night. A front moving to the east across northern Alaska will bring chances for snow on Thursday, especially to the south slopes of the Brooks Range where a couple of inches of snowfall is possible.

West Coast and Western Interior: Some lingering snow and blowing snow over the Chukchi Sea coast will dissipate this evening. The next system we are concerned with will arrive tomorrow. Snowfall will move into the Yukon Delta tomorrow afternoon, with snowfall spreading north and east tomorrow night. 2 to 4 inches of snow is expected. Snowfall with this system will taper off in the late morning on Thursday as the front pushes into the central Interior. Another shortwave will bring snowfall to to areas along the coast Thursday night.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7: Another system looks to reach the west coast Friday evening and will push into the Interior on Saturday. This system has the potential to bring a good snowfall to the west coast; however, there is still a lot of uncertainty with this system, especially as it moves inland.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4 . None.

AFG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES. Winter Weather Advisory for AKZ206-AKZ207.

Brisk Wind Advisory for PKZ220-PKZ225-PKZ230-PKZ235.

GEOS Local Image of Alaska    EDIT
NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases. For example, there is very little tidal current data in newer data bases so current data is likely wrong to some extent. This data is NOT FOR NAVIGATION. See the XTide disclaimer for details. In addition, tide and current are influenced by storms, river flow, and other factors beyond the ability of any predictive program.
