Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 158 PM AKDT Thu Sep 24 2020

SYNOPSIS. A weakening weather front across the Eastern and Central Interior is maintaining overcast skies and rain this afternoon. Snow continues north of the Yukon Flats, where additional snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches are expected for the Dalton Highway from Atigun Pass to the Arctic Coast, as well as across the southeastern Brooks Range. Snow levels drop to 1500 feet north of Fairbanks by late tonight and in the Alaska Range as well. Snow accumulations of less than an inch are expected in these areas through tonight. Along the West Coast and across the Western Interior, quiet conditions are expected. Drier conditions are expected for much of northern Alaska for the weekend.

DISCUSSION. Aloft . At 500 mb, a broad longwave trough extending south across the Chukchi and Bering Seas, and much of the state this afternoon, will persist through the weekend. A low centered over the Chukotsk Peninsula will dive southwest to be over the Gulf of Anadyr by Friday morning continuing southwest into the Western Bering Sea by Saturday. As the low dives southwest into the Bering it will bring cooler air to the West Coast for Friday. A shortwave trough over Bristol Bay will move east into the Gulf of Alaska by Friday afternoon and over the AK Panhandle by Saturday afternoon. A shortwave trough moving north across the Eastern Alaska Range this afternoon will continue north overnight to be over the Yukon Flats Friday morning and across the Eastern Brooks Range Saturday morning, with drier conditions occurring behind it. A ridge will extend north across northwestern Canada through the weekend, pushing into the Interior by Saturday afternoon. As the ridge builds westward across the Interior, warmer air will move in.

Surface . A weakening front extending northwest across the Upper Tanana Valley early this afternoon will stall out near Fairbanks this evening, with precip slowly diminishing tonight and Friday. A stalled boundary along the Brooks Range will support enhanced snowfall for the eastern Brooks Range and the eastern Beaufort Sea coast. A ridge of high pressure will move south from the Arctic to extend across the northern Chukchi and Beaufort Seas Friday through the weekend, resulting in increasing winds through the Bering Strait.

Models . 12z model run initialized well against the 12Z RAOBS and observations. Models are in overall fair agreement throughout the short term period with the major features. The GFS and NAM bring a much more pronounced shortwave across the Eastern Alaska Range today and moves the feature north through the weekend, while the ECMWF is much more subtle with the feature through about 12Z Friday, when it begins to show a more pronounced shortwave moving north. Given that the NAM and GFS and later the ECMWF all move a more pronounced shortwave through, have opted to go with a blend of models for precip and QPF.

North Slope and Brooks Range . Widespread snow is expected to continue along the eastern Arctic Coast and across the Brooks Range through Friday with coverage diminishing on Saturday. Additional snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are expected along the Dalton Highway north to Chandalar Shelf and 4 to 6 inches north of Chandalar Shelf to Deadhorse. Easterly winds with gusts to around 30 mph continue along the coast this afternoon, creating areas of blowing snow. Winds will diminish overnight and through the day Friday. Stratus and fog likely to continue through the weekend as onshore flow persists. Near normal temperatures are expected.

West Coast and Western Interior . Fairly benign weather conditions expected across the region through the weekend. Precipitation will largely be limited to Diomede and St Lawrence Island. North winds will increase to 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph through the Bering Strait tonight and Friday and persist through Sunday. Temperatures will trend downwards a few degrees Friday before warming through the weekend.

Central and Eastern Interior . A weakening front that stalls out near Fairbanks this evening is maintaining overcast skies and rain across much of the region this afternoon. North of the Yukon Flats in the southeastern Brooks Range snow continues. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the southeastern Brooks Range through Friday morning, where an additional 4 to 6 inches of snow are expected. Snow levels will continue to drop through tonight, with light snow accumulations possible in the hills north of Fairbanks and in the Alaska Range tonight. Conditions will slowly improve through tomorrow morning with drier conditions expected for the weekend. Temperatures trend upwards through the weekend.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4 . None.

HYDROLOGY. No concerns at this time.

GEOS Local Image of Alaska    EDIT
NOTE: East coast views moved to GEOS-16. They are experimental and not well supported by NOAA so they may not be correct so be warned. This change required redoing a large amount of the GOES code. If the image you are expecting is not showing, please let me know. You may need to use the EDIT function to update your location.

Finally, tide and current data on this site is from 2007 and 2008 data bases, which may contain even older data. Changes in harbors due to building or dredging change tides and currents and for that reason many of the locations presented are no longer supported by newer data bases.
