AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 451 AM PDT Mon Jun 17 2024

SYNOPSIS
Dry weather is expected for the foreseeable future.
Interior temperatures begin a slow warming trend through the work week, with another heat possible late this week and this weekend.

DISCUSSION
Latest satellite WV imagery is showing a shortwave trough axis moving over N CA early this morning. Dry, cool air will spread from north to south behind the passage of this feature, drying out lower levels an acting to keep interior afternoon high temperatures below climatological normal. This drier air has allowed overnight lows to fall below normal in select valleys of southern Humboldt and southern Trinity early this morning, with patches of frost likely forming. The eastern perimeter of Lake and Trinity counties may see some breezy N to NE winds today while this dry air continues to spread southward, bringing a slight risk for rapid spread of grass fires today, especially in Lake county. See Fire Wx section for more details.

Otherwise, dry weather is forecast to persist for the next week.
Longwave troughing is forecast to continue aloft well into the work week. Afternoon highs may creep back up to above normal late this week as ridging noses in from the west, with a moderate heat wave possible Friday and Saturday.

AVIATION
The passage of a dry cold front associated with the low pressure system to the north of the region has stifled coastal stratus development overnight and into this morning. However, there could still be some spotty stratus development around Humboldt Bay and down the Eel River Valley creating potential for MVFR conditions.
But, despite this, with the sun rising and the increase of northwesterly winds mid to late this morning, any stratus that may have formed will dissipate. For all terminals, VFR conditions are forecast through the TAF period with gusty northwesterly winds. HRRR indicates a high potential for gusts to 30 mph for the coastal terminals and to 20 mph around Ukiah. Later this evening, winds will die down in the region. /JLW

MARINE
Overnight, northerly winds have trended down over the marine waters with the sea state remaining steep. Every zone except the northern inner waters maintains small craft conditions as a result.
By late this morning, northerlies are expected to increase again which will extend a small craft advisory for the northern inner waters and a gale warning for the southern outer waters. Both HRRR and NBM indicate a high likelihood of gale force gusts in the lee of Cape Mendocino throughout the day today and continuing overnight tonight. Winds and steep seas will trend down into the middle of the week. /JLW

FIRE WEATHER
NW winds have weakened overnight and are forecast to turn NE this morning, ushering in a drier airmass and possibly driving RH values into the low teens today. These winds are expected to be the strongest on the eastern perimeter of Lake and Trinity counties, with some gusts up to 25 mph possible in eastern Lake county. The strong winds and low humidity will yield an elevated fire weather threat, particularly for the south and east side of Lake County. A Red Flag Warning remains in zone 264 (southern Lake) through much of today, primarily for the possibility of rapid spreading grass fires. Winds are forecast to turn NW again late this afternoon and this evening, which should bring moisture to the area and improve recoveries tonight.
Lighter NW winds are forecast each afternoon for the upcoming week across the interior, with afternoon RH values in the low 20s and recoveries in the 50s to 70s.
