AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 241 PM PDT Mon Oct 2 2023
SYNOPSIS
Coastal drizzle and widespread cloudiness occurring tonight will be replaced by warm and dry conditions during midweek as offshore winds develop behind a frontal boundary. Mild conditions will continue into the weekend, followed by cooler and wetter conditions next week.
DISCUSSION
A modest zone of low to midlevel warm air advection will aid in a deepening moist layer that will spread south across the region this evening/tonight. Light rain and/or drizzle will develop in response, and impact mainly coastal areas and adjacent foothills in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. A midlevel shortwave trough and associated minor surface frontal boundary will then move south across the WRN CONUS by Tuesday afternoon. A drier airmass will spread south behind the front and clear out lingering cloudiness. Offshore directed-winds will also be probable across the ridges of NWRN CA...with sub-advisory gusts near 30 mph peaking across the windiest ridges Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. The offshore winds will also promote warmer temperatures, with highs Wednesday and Thursday ranging from the 80s and 90s over interior valleys, to around 70 along the immediate coast.
After Thursday, temperatures will remain mild, but will also enter a gradual cooling trend as a ridge over the NERN PAC/WRN CONUS breaks down and is replaced by large-scale troughing. Multi-model guidance also shows a cold front approaching the EKA CWA during Monday, and will yield a 40-60% of frontal rainfall.

AVIATION
VFR conditions prevailed along the North Coast today.
However, a brief period of stratus CIGS occurred over Humboldt Bay/ACV this morning. Also, a stratus surged rounded PT Arena on the Mendocino Coast this morning...reaching Ft Bragg this afternoon. 12-1 PM, Vis Sat picture showed a plethora of thick clouds from Southwest Oregon approaching far northern Del Norte Coast. Theses clouds will continued to increase in the evening/tonight accompanied by mostly light drizzle/rain at CEC/ACV/EKA. This system will also bring MVFR/IFR conditions to the main coastal terminals
Inland areas
including UKI will remain VFR and dry. /TA
MARINE
High pressure building behind a front on Tuesday will yield strengthening north winds and steep wind waves, with gales expected across the outer waters and small craft conditions forecast to occur across the inner waters. A thermal trough will then build westward out over the waters on Wednesday and the strongest northerlies will shift into the NW portion of the outer waters north of Cape Mendocino. Otherwise, winds will diminish and become light and variable across almost all waters Thursday and Friday. In addition, a long period NW swell will build late today through Tuesday and then subside for the remainder of the week.
FIRE WEATHER
An upper ridge positioned over the NERN PAC will focus mid-level northerly flow across the WRN CONUS through mid week. A dry cold front embedded within that flow regime will move south across the region during Tuesday, and will aid in the initiation of offshore-directed ridgetop winds that are forecast to peak in intensity during Wednesday morning. Gusts up to 30 mph are expected, particularly across north-south oriented ridges.
Some evidence of mountain wave development is also present in east-west model cross sections, especially near Cloverdale, CA.
Thus, further enhancement to wind speeds will be possible.
However, critical fire weather conditions will be mitigated by marginal RH values. Min values from 20-30 percent followed by overnight recoveries ranging from 40-60 percent will support an elevated fire weather threat, but those values will be insufficient for a fire weather watch and/or red flag warning.
