DISCUSSION
Hot and mostly dry conditions continue at least the next 7 days (and likely beyond) with afternoon breezes. Smoke from regional and local wildfires will also create hazy skies at times. There will be occasional chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms. This afternoon, the focus for a shower or two will be across southern Lemhi County, then across the Glacier Park region on Tuesday afternoon.
By Wednesday, a disturbance from the southwest will draw up monsoonal moisture with an increase in shower and thunderstorm coverage across much of the region, lasting into Wednesday night for northwest Montana. Rainfall amounts will be minimal but gusty outflow of 35-45 mph may occur with stronger showers or storms.
The ridge of high pressure over the western U.S. amplifies the end of this week and weekend causing daytime and nighttime temperatures to warm a few degrees further. High temperatures for the lower valleys of north-central Idaho will be back up near 110 degrees. In fact, Orofino and Riggins have a 53% and 51% probability respectively of exceeding 110F. Meanwhile, there is a 60-70% probability for the lower valleys of western Montana to reach at least 100F this weekend, putting daily record highs in jeopardy. For heat safety tips, please check out weather.gov/heat for more details.
About half of the ensemble clusters show a ridge breakdown early next week (July 22-24). If this occurs, slightly cooler temperatures would be welcomed but unfortunately this pattern could open up the potential of increased winds, additional thunderstorms, and new fire starts.
AVIATION
Monsoon moisture will bring a chance for gusty showers and isolated thunderstorms across southern Lemhi County this afternoon. Terminals will be hot and dry with westerly breezes 10 to 15 knots, and gusts to 20 knots at times into the early evening hours. Hot and dry conditions continue on Tuesday with a only few showers/thunderstorms in the Glacier Region later in the day. Additionally, smoke from regional and local wildfires will create hazy skies at times with localized visibility reductions.
