KEY MESSAGES
1. Sierra Crest thunderstorm activity continues today.
2. Temperatures will moderate for most of the work week before rebounding higher late week into the weekend. Another round of excessive heat.
3. Thunderstorm potential also returns this weekend.
DISCUSSION
The hefty ridge that was parked over us just this last week has edged closer to the Four Corners today. That has allowed for several minor vort lobes to round the ridge, which has brought some moisture and storms to the region. That trend has continued today with a shortwave offshore of NorCal nudging heights lower still. While that shortwave is bringing some relief on the heat front, it is also sparking some thunderstorms in the High Sierras.
19Z radar analysis shows some shower activity developing in the Yosemite area with a few lightning strikes reported as well. A bit of good news here is PWatts are sitting around 3/4". While not good wetting rain, still enough to combat the ligthning's fire potential some this evening.
The aforementioned ridge is progged to retrograde back over the Southwestern States in the coming days, with the ridge axis taking a more positive tilt and locking its sights on the Colorado Basin vs. the Golden State. So, while heights will be increasing late week, we shouldn't see the extreme heat of the last couple of weeks just yet.
The location of the ridge axis late week and into the weekend may allow some monsoonal moisture to slide into area, especially with any Gulf Surges that might occur. That moisture increase will once again bring the threat of thunderstorms and lightning to much of the higher elevations. Still significant ensemble distribution concerning the amount and location of that moisture, so stay tuned for updates on the thunderstorm potential.
AVIATION
Areas of MVFR and local mountain obscuring IFR in showers and thunderstorms over the Sierra Nevada through 04Z Mon. Areas of MVFR and local IFR visibility will continue in and around wildfires. Otherwise, VFR conditions will prevail across the central CA interior until further notice.
