SHORT TERM
/Through Thursday night/...Little in the way of impactful weather for this short term forecast period. Most notable item is the possibility of heavy rain showers on Thursday night over Juneau as an easterly wave moves through the area.
Looked at the possibility for thunderstorm activity associated with this feature, but decided against including them due to the event being late at night and crossing the ice field - both of which work against vigorous convective activity.
Daytime highs are still trending below normal with values ranging from the mid 50s to low 60s under partly to mostly cloudy skies.
Overnight lows will be getting down to the low to mid 40s.
LONG TERM
For latter half of the week, we expect to have a low continuing to meander around the BC coast and southern panhandle that should bring some showers to parts of the panhandle. This could also bring some thunderstorms to the border and areas around the border for Friday through the weekend. As this low slowly moves out of the area, high pressure will remain off to the west allowing for NW flow across the gulf. Temperatures across the panhandle are also expected to respond to the mild weather with some increasing warmer temperatures as well. This will make things feel more like summer instead of feeling like spring. For the extended into next week, conditions are expected to be more likely warmer and drier for most of the panhandle according to the Climate Prediction Center.
Big changes to the long term forecast today were the introduction of more chances of an isolated thunderstorm along the Coast mountains up to White Pass and over towards Haines Pass.
AVIATION
For the TAF period, VFR conditions are expected to continue across the panhandle. Some lowered ceilings are possible but these are not expected to be impactful. Otherwise, with the clearing skies and warming temperatures, sea breezes are expected to continue until sunset then should calm down. With similar weather expected tomorrow, expect the sea breeze to become active again by mid- morning tomorrow.
MARINE
/Through Thursday night/...Lightweight summer conditions with little in the way of impactful winds...except for Lynn Canal.
There, southerly winds of 20 kts this evening will diminish overnight. Similar situation for the eastern Gulf of Alaska: SE 15 to 20 kts with seas 7 ft or less.
