SYNOPSIS
A weakening upper low over the islands will slowly drift eastward away from the state over the next few days. Expect continued periods of showers with isolated thunderstorms favoring Maui and the Big Island tonight. Shower activity will decrease on Sunday as the low continues to weaken and drift farther eastward away from the state. Periods of showers in a light wind pattern will continue into the first half of the week. A stronger low approaches the islands from the north on Wednesday with unstable southerly kona winds over the state producing periods of heavy showers and thunderstorms through at least Friday.

DISCUSSION
Starting with the satellite imagery water vapor channel shows a weakening upper level low pressure system pivoting over the islands this evening. This upper low will slowly drift eastward away from the state over the next few days with decreasing shower trends and diminishing thunderstorm activity on Sunday. Heavy rainfall trends are on the decline for most areas, however localized heavy showers remain possible near any thunderstorms.
The Flood Watch was cancelled this evening across the state due to the decreasing confidence in flooding statewide as the low pressure system weakens.

Monday through Tuesday...Heavy rain and thunderstorm threats diminish by Monday as the low weakens and slowly drifts northeastward away from the state. Light large scale southeasterly winds will allow local scale land and sea breezes to develop over all islands. Weak upper level troughing however will keep periods of showers in the forecast favoring island mountain and interior sections each afternoon and early evening through Tuesday.

Wednesday through Friday...The latest model guidance remains in fair agreement that another unseasonably strong low will approach the islands from the north on Wednesday. A surface low forming under the upper low will be stronger than the previous system and may produce southerly kona winds over the western half of the state. The latest forecast guidance shows the surface low center will setup roughly 600 miles northwest of Kauai by Thursday.
Unsurprisingly this surface low position has changed a bit over the past 24 hours. However global model solutions continue to show a trailing trough with southerly kona winds over the islands through the period. This unstable southerly kona wind flow and surface trough may bring another round of heavy rain and thunderstorms favoring the western islands of Niihau, Kauai and Oahu from Wednesday through Friday. In the latest model solutions Kauai County and Oahu are under the highest threat for flooding, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds during this time period.

This portion of the long range weather forecast will likely change over time. Much of these severe weather impacts are highly dependent upon the precise location of this low pressure system and surface trough relative to each island. Small changes to the location of the low center will make large changes to the island forecast. Stay tuned for changes to the long range local weather forecast, as the time period grows shorter, and island by island weather impacts evolve.

AVIATION
A strong upper level disturbance will continue to gradually move across the state through the weekend. As a result, localized enhanced shower activity with towering cumulus and isolated thunderstorms primarily for the Big Island will produce periods of MVFR and local IFR conditions. With both the upper level disturbance and light to moderate surface winds persisting across the area through the weekend, a similar yet less intense pattern can be expected tomorrow.

AIRMET Sierra for tempo mountain obscuration is in effect across the entire island chain tonight. This AIRMET will likely be needed through tomorrow for portions of island chain as showers develop and dissipate.

AIRMET Tango for moderate to isolated severe mid to upper level turbulence remains in effect as the upper level disturbance moves across the state. Conditions will likely improve by tomorrow morning.

AMD NOT SKED for PMDY continues due to equipment issues, with no timeline for restoration. AMD NOT SKED for PHJR also due to equipment issues.

MARINE
Moderate northeasterly trades will ease near Kauai tonight, with light and variable winds persisting over the remainder of the state. Moderate to fresh trade winds will begin to return from west to east across the island chain on Sunday then persist through Monday. Winds will weaken Monday night and become more southerly on Tuesday as troughing amplifies to the west of the state. Moderate southerly winds will develop in advance of a front Wednesday, with the front then moving into the islands on Thursday with moderate northwesterly developing behind the front over the western end of the state, while moderate southerly winds prevail in advance of the feature.

Surf along south facing shores will slowly decline tonight through Tuesday. Another series of overlapping, long-period south swells will begin moving in on Tuesday, with reinforcements giving another noticeable boost to south shore surf Wednesday through next weekend.

A small, short-period north swell will decline tonight and Sunday. A reinforcing small, long-period northwest swell will build Sunday night, giving north shore surf a boost Monday and Tuesday. A series of small reinforcing northwest swells will keep some small surf moving into north facing shores Wednesday into next weekend.

Surf along east facing shores will remain well below normal levels through late next week.
