SYNOPSIS
Trade winds will gradually strengthen the next couple of days, delivering a few windward showers. Trade wind speeds will likely peak on Tuesday, becoming locally strong and gusty. Winds will diminish and become light Thursday and Friday as a front approaches, with continued limited rainfall. The front will likely dissipate near the islands over the weekend, with light to moderate trade winds returning.
DISCUSSION
Visible satellite and radar show showery low cloud cover anchored along the windward slopes this afternoon. Light wind flow has allowed localized sea breezes set up over leeward areas producing some cloud cover. The trade winds are on their way up, supported by surface highs to the distant northwest and northeast, while a weakening and lingering trough northwest of Kauai is keeping the local pressure gradient on the looser side and winds a bit lighter.
As the trough weakens and the high to the northwest moves east Monday, trade winds will strengthen further. Trades will likely be strongest on Tuesday as the high passes north of the islands, with the potential for a Wind Advisory where winds are most accelerated by terrain. The high will push a frontal band toward the islands from the north, but guidance indicates it will stall north of Kauai. The strengthening trade winds are not expected to bring much more than a few brief windward showers that favor nights and mornings.
Late Wednesday and Thursday, developing strong low pressure to the north will force the high eastward, with the associated ridge extending over the islands from the northeast. Winds will weaken and become light and variable by Friday as a front associated with the low approaches from the northwest, with continued mostly dry weather expected. The front may bring a brief period of increased showers to Kauai and Oahu early next weekend before dissipating, with light to moderate trade winds and limited showers returning thereafter.
AVIATION
Light to moderate trades will persist today, then increase to moderate to locally breezy late tonight through Monday as surface high pressure builds in north of the state. Isolated to scattered showers will be mainly limited to windward locations with greatest coverage along windward Big Island. Periods of MVFR ceilings and visibility are likely to persist for the next several hours along windward Big Island with pockets of IFR conditions.
Elsewhere, expect mainly clear skies with VFR conditions.
AIRMET SIERRA remains in effect for north through east sections of the Big Island above 2000 feet for tempo mountain obscuration above 2000 feet due to clouds and showers.
MARINE
A light trade wind pattern will persist through tonight. A hurricane force low far north of the islands will track eastward through early Monday, setting up a tighter pressure gradient across the region which will strengthen trades into the fresh to strong category by Tuesday afternoon. Stronger trades will persist through Wednesday. Models show another, weaker low may push far enough south to drag a diffuse front into local waters by next weekend. A large swell created by the hurricane force low will send a large enough swell into our offshore waters Monday to prompt Small Craft Advisories as early as tonight.
A High Surf Advisory (HSA) remains in effect for north and west- facing shores of the smaller islands through Monday afternoon. The associated swell will peak today before slowly decreasing. The next north-northwest (330-350 degree) swell, generated by the hurricane force low, will arrive late Monday and peak Tuesday.
This large, long period swell will likely drive surf heights above High Surf Warning (HSW) thresholds Tuesday before declining Tuesday night through the remainder of the week. Strengthening trades should generate rough surf along eastern shores from Tuesday into the middle of the week. Small background swell leading to very small surf will continue along south-facing shores throughout the week.
HFO WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES
High Surf Advisory until 6 PM HST Monday for north and west facing shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai and north facing shores of Maui.
