New AVIATION
SHORT TERM
(Today through Sunday afternoon)
Issued at 209 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024
We have to enjoy the seasonable temperatures this weekend because the heat is on the way for next week. Current upper air analysis shows a ridge over the Desert Southwest with a trough over Central Texas leaving West Texas and eastern New Mexico in a northeasterly flow with relatively low 500mb heights. The trough lifts off to the northeast beginning Sunday allowing the ridge to the west to build east into the Central Plains. The increasing subsidence will cause temperatures to increase from seasonal highs in the low to mid 90s to upper 90s and low 100s Sunday. Rain chances will be restricted to the mountains.

LONG TERM
(Sunday night through Friday)
Issued at 209 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024
To make an Olympics analogy, the long term is taking the baton from the short term and continuing the heating race. The ridge to our west builds east, fortunately with the ridge axis to our north where the greatest heating will be. The Texas Panhandle is actually forecast to be hotter than the Permian Basin next week so the heat here could be worse. However Highs in the upper 90s to low 100s will still be hot with some locations in the river valleys nearing Heat Advisory criteria so this will need to be monitored. The heat peaks Wed/Thu before a trough moving across the northern Plains and Great Lakes weakens the ridge over Texas and causes it to retrograde back west. We could see a front move into the area at that time, but for now will only count on lower heights aloft allowing for a few degrees of cooling and keep the rain chances to the mountains.

AVIATION
(12Z TAFS)
Issued at 617 AM CDT Sat Jul 27 2024
VFR conditions and light southeast winds will continue. A line of SHRA has developed between INK and MAF but is expected to dissipate in the next hour or two and not impact flying operations at the local TAF sites.
