New AVIATION
SHORT TERM
(Today through Thursday afternoon)
Issued at 257 AM CDT Wed May 15 2024
With better moisture return this evening, the weak dryline has been pushed to the west of Midland/Odessa and snakes southward towards Fort Stockton and Dryden. Some instability and increased moisture will lead to an isolated storm or two developing over the eastern zones this afternoon. Forecast soundings show a large dew point depression indicating that strong to damaging winds would be the main threat in any storms that do develop. Areas west of Midland/Odessa stay hot and dry with highs reaching into the mid 90s. Higher elevations staying "cooler" in the upper 80s to low 90s.
A shortwave trough passes across southern New Mexico heading into Thursday. A surface low develops with a cold front extending to the northeast. Showers and storms will develop with the front and move eastward over the course of the afternoon and into Thursday evening. Strong mid-level flow and instability ahead of the front will lead to some storms becoming severe with large hail and damaging winds being the main threats. Stayed tuned to updates over the next day as some of the details on storm timing and location may change.
LONG TERM
(Thursday night through Tuesday)
Issued at 257 AM CDT Wed May 15 2024
A weak cold front keeps temperatures near normal on Friday. Enjoy that day because it will be the last before an early taste of summer arrives over the weekend and into early next week. The jet stream becomes positioned over the southwestern United States in a zonal flow regime. Westerly flow associated with the jet will cause favorable downsloping conditions and unseasonably hot temperatures. Highs will exceed 100 degrees for the first time this year for many cities including Midland and Odessa. The hottest day of the forecast period appears to be Monday when everywhere but the mountains west of the Pecos River reach the triple digits. Slight relief arrives Tuesday with a weak cold front though temperatures will remain well above normal.
