New LONG TERM

SHORT TERM
(Rest of today through Wednesday)
Issued at 1206 PM EST Tue Feb 20 2024

A gorgeous afternoon and evening will prevail across South Florida today. Winding back the clock for a few hours, the 12z MFL upper air sounding showed a cool and dry airmass in place across South Florida with a precipitable water value of 0.33 inches, mid level relative humidity of 6%, and low level humidity values of 36%. With such ample dry air across the boundary layer and a stout stabilizing inversion, it will be a mostly sunny day across the region with reinforcing cold air advection via light peninsular drainage flow.
Zooming out a bit and looking at the synoptic picture, A mid level cutoff low will push through the Southeast today and then off the Carolina coastline into the western Atlantic tonight into Wednesday.
At the same time, a strong mid level ridge centered over Mexico will gradually extend eastward into the Gulf of Mexico heading into Wednesday. This will allow for the dry northwesterly wind flow aloft over the region to continue through the middle of the week. At the surface, high pressure centered off to the north will continue to bring mainly dry conditions to South Florida through Wednesday.

With northwesterly wind flow firmly in place, cold air advection will continue during this time frame. This will keep high temperatures today and Wednesday in the upper 60s over the Lake Okeechobee region and in the lower 70s over the east coast metro areas. Tonight will be another chilly night as lows drop into the lower 40s across interior portions of Southwest Florida, and into the mid to upper 40s across the rest of the interior. The east coast metro areas will drop into the lower 50s.

LONG TERM
(Wednesday night through next Monday)
Issued at 247 PM EST Tue Feb 20 2024

As we progress into the latter half of the week, the deep high pressure will remain over Florida as the surface ridge begins to flatten with the high pressure's slow shift eastward. With the zonal flow, the conditions will remain stable before a cold front arrives on Friday. Model guidance are in relative agreement that light showers will quickly move across South FL with the frontal system late Friday/overnight Saturday. NBM is favoring dry conditions; however, ensemble and deterministic models agree for patchy light showers and cloudy skies. QPF values are looking low with PWATs currently forecast to barely reach 1", if that - thus, slight chances (15-20%) for a few hundredths or so. It will be a quick moving system and sets up for drier conditions. A mid-level trough progresses through with the front before another ridge sets up over the GOMEX as we move into the new week.

As the high pressure drifts eastward, southerly flow will return.
Therefore, it will help maintain comfortable, seasonal temperatures through the weekend despite the cold frontal passage. Following cooler low morning temperatures on Thursday (40s & 50s), temperatures will be on the rise. Trending warmer as we move into the weekend, highs will be in the mid to upper 70s, with potential to reach 80 near the Atlantic, through the extended forecast.
Morning temperatures will rise back into the 50s & 60s. However, with a northerly wind shift, temperatures are trending cooler on Sunday into next week, with a drop by 5-10 degrees, mostly felt in the morning hours before sunrise.

AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1206 PM EST Tue Feb 20 2024

VFR and northwesterly wind flow throughout the TAF period. Winds will become light overnight before becoming breezy after sunrise tomorrow.

MARINE
Issued at 1206 PM EST Tue Feb 20 2024

A fresh to strong northwesterly wind flow will continue over the Atlantic waters through the middle of the week. Northeasterly swells will also linger over the Atlantic waters as an area of low pressure pulls away to the northeast. This will keep seas ranging between 5 and 8 feet especially in the Gulf Stream through the middle of the week. Winds and seas will gradually begin to subside towards the end of the week. Across the Gulf waters, a moderate northerly wind flow will continue through the middle of the week with seas remaining between 1 to 3 feet.

BEACHES
Issued at 1206 PM EST Tue Feb 20 2024

With a lingering northeasterly swell in place, there will be a high risk of rip currents across the Palm Beaches through the rest of the week. An elevated risk of rip currents will continue across the rest of the Atlantic Coast beaches during this time frame.
