New AVIATION
SHORT TERM
(Today through Wednesday)
Issued at 338 AM CST Tue Nov 28 2023
Surface high pressure over northern Texas will continue to support weak northerly winds and cool temperatures today. Meanwhile, southwesterly mid-level flow will will continue to transport moisture in a weak overrunning pattern, providing overcast skies and potentially some brief periods of light rain or drizzle.
By tonight weak upper-level ridging will begin to build overhead and the surface high will move further east, allowing for a easterly to southeasterly wind shift Wednesday. This return flow from the Gulf will bring slightly warmer temperatures and increased surface moisture. Overcast skies will continue Wednesday, with the additional moisture increasing rain chances Wednesday afternoon.
LONG TERM
(Wednesday night through Monday)
Issued at 338 AM CST Tue Nov 28 2023
A mid-level short-wave over the Southern California/Baja Wednesday evening will swing eastward into New Mexico and West Texas on Thursday. At the surface, a storm system will develop across the southern High Plains Wednesday night. The pressure falls across the Plains will support a tighter pressure gradient and thus stronger southeast to south winds Thursday and Thursday night. Along the lower Texas coast, a warm front will surge north on Thursday. A few showers and thunderstorms will be possible Wednesday night into Thursday morning in advance of the warm front.
The 500mb short wave trough will sweep across North Texas and Oklahoma late Thursday, with Plains high pressure subsequently dropping south into Central Texas. A cold front is expected to move into Deep South Texas before stalling off the coast on Friday. Drier air should filter into the region in the wake of the frontal boundary. However, ample moisture combined with lift from the lingering front will support isolated to scattered showers and Thunderstorms across the coast waters Friday through Monday.
Another, deeper Southwest United States trough will move east on Saturday, with a large ridge behind it. The surface air mass will surge southeast from the Pacific Northwest and will definitely push a better defined cold front in the Deep South Texas late Sunday into Monday morning.
AVIATION
(18Z TAFS)
Issued at 1135 AM CST Tue Nov 28 2023
Overcast with VFR ceilings at the TAF sites. There is plenty of moisture evident on satellite with a thick inversion in the lower 8 KFt. Clouds will not be going anywhere soon. North winds will hold up through tonight with mostly low VFR ceilings. Winds will veer to southeast on Wednesday with a coastal trough present along the lower Texas coast. Once winds go east to southeast ceilings will lower more solidly to MVFR.
MARINE
Issued at 338 AM CST Tue Nov 28 2023
Now through Wednesday...High pressure building over the northern Gulf today will support weakening pressure gradients and a return of favorable marine conditions through Wednesday. As the high pressure builds over the Gulf, winds will shift easterly and then southeasterly by Wednesday afternoon. Overcast skies will continue through the short term period, and with some additional light rain possible Wednesday afternoon as the southeasterly flow brings a slight increase in low- level moisture.
Wednesday night through Sunday...Moderate to fresh southeast to south winds and building seas will develop from Wednesday night through Thursday night. Moderate winds will shift to north and northeast Friday through Saturday night as a cold front moves south into the waters. Small craft should exercise caution to low end small craft advisory conditions will be possible Wednesday night through Friday with slightly better conditions Friday night into Sunday.
